Techniques for controlling a process to prevent injury are presented. The techniques include obtaining a location estimation of a mobile transmitter affixed to an object, where the location estimation is relative to a location of a fixed receiver, and where the obtaining the location estimation includes sending an ultra wideband communication from the mobile transmitter to the fixed receiver and acquiring the ultra wideband communication by a phased antenna array of the fixed receiver; assessing, based on the location estimation, that the mobile transmitter is within an impermissible location; determining that the location estimation is sufficiently accurate based on a distance between the location estimation and the fixed receiver; and interrupting the process upon both assessing that the mobile transmitter is within an impermissible location and determining that the location estimation is sufficiently accurate.

A fastener system for joining substrates of a workpiece with working and blind sides includes a nut member, a sleeve member and a bolt member. The nut member includes a nut bore with internal threads. The nut member is placed with the nut bore over a joining bore through the substrates on the blind side. The sleeve member includes an outer sleeve surface with a lubricious coating. The sleeve member is inserted in the joining bore from the working side. The bolt member includes a head portion, a threaded portion and a shank portion. The bolt member is inserted in a central bore of the sleeve member. The threaded portion engages with the internal threads of the nut member. As the bolt member becomes fully engaged, the shank portion causes radial expansion of the sleeve member, and the sleeve member provides an interference fit within the joining bore.

Systems and methods are provided for assembling aircraft fuselages. One embodiment is a method for assembling a fuselage of an aircraft. The method includes indexing an arcuate section of a fuselage to a frame installation station, feeding a frame at the frame installation station into a concavity defined by the arcuate section, placing the frame against an Inner Mold Line (IML) of the arcuate section while the frame is within the concavity, and affixing the frame to the arcuate section.

In one aspect, a method of manufacturing an assembly of components includes positioning first and second components into a nominal configuration with respect to each other at a first factory location. The method further includes drilling a fastener joining hole through an interface of the first and second components at the first factory location. The method further includes positioning the first and second components for fastener joining at a second factory location. The method further includes inserting a fastener into the fastener joining hole to couple the first and second components together.

A method is provided for installing a fastener into an opening of a structure. The fastener includes a sleeve and a pin threadably received into the sleeve. The tool includes a tool locking feature that is configured to engage the fastener locking feature to secure together the fastener and the tool in the initial position. A method of installing the fastener to the workpiece uses the tool.

Systems and methods are provided for inspecting fastener installation. One embodiment is a method for inspecting installation of a fastener. The method includes determining an initial distance between a nose of a swage tool and an Inner Mold Line (IML) of a part, operating the swage tool to swage a collar onto a fastener that protrudes through the IML of the part, determining a terminal distance of the nose to the IML during swaging, prior to a pintail of the fastener breaking, and arriving at a conclusion indicating a state of a fastener installation, based on the terminal distance.

Systems and methods are provided for proximity detection in a fabrication environment. One embodiment is a method for reporting proximity in an assembly environment. The method includes inserting an arm of a bracket into an interior of a part that is held by a cradle, and that is worked upon by a robot, placing indexing features at the bracket into contact with indexing features of the cradle, operating sensors at the bracket to directly detect a location of a first proximity detector worn by a technician and a location of the second proximity detector at the robot, and directing the first proximity detector to provide a warning to the technician if a distance between the first proximity detector and the second proximity detector is less than a threshold.

The system also includes a splicing cell configured to receive a plurality of riveted planks from the riveting cell and to attach one or more splice stringers to the plurality of riveted planks. A blind tack fastener includes a pull stem having an elongated shaft with an extended tail portion. The blind tack fastener also includes a crush-initiating washer, a crush sleeve, and a swage collar, surrounding the elongated shaft of the pull stem. The elongated shaft has a breakaway groove configured to create a predictive fracture point below the head-end surface of the swage collar, such that a hole in the swage collar serves as a centering lead-in for a drill that can be used to remove the blind tack fastener.
