A system includes different types of downhole sensing tools deployed in a borehole, wherein the different types of downhole sensing tools are optimized to identify a downhole condition based on a predetermined downhole evaluation plan that accounts for sensing tool availability and performance constraints. The system also includes at least one processing unit configured to analyze measurements collected by the different types of downhole sensing tools, wherein the collected measurements are analyzed together to identify the downhole condition. The system also includes at least one device that performs an operation in response to the identified downhole condition.

Methods and systems to optimize downhole condition identification and response using different types of downhole sensing tools

A method includes generating k, (k+1), . . . , (k)control inputs for actuating flow control devices of a production well and/or an injection well of a well system during corresponding sampling steps k, (k+1), . . . , k, actuating the flow control devices during the kstep using the kcontrol input, measuring a position of a fluid front and a dynamic state of the well system during the kstep; predicting a dynamic state of the well system at each step (k+1), . . . , kusing a state predictor, updating the (k+1), . . . , (k)control inputs based on the predicted dynamic states, optimizing the (k+1), . . . , (k)control inputs using a desired cost function, actuating the flow control devices during the (k+1)step using the optimized value for the (k+1)step, and measuring the position of the fluid front and a dynamic state of the well system during the (k+1)step.

A method for controlling drilling fluid properties, in some embodiments, comprises determining a predictive model for a fluid circulation system that routes drilling fluid downhole to a drill bit to remove debris from said drill bit; determining a cost function associated with the fluid circulation system; using the predictive model and the cost function to determine a set of input values for the predictive model; operating a controlled device according to at least some of the set of input values, said controlled device changes properties of the drilling fluid in the fluid circulation system; and obtaining measurements of the properties.

Methods and systems for controlling the downhole position and velocity of a work string using a downhole position and velocity controller may be configured or otherwise programmed to account for force compensation. For example, the work string may undergo significant length changes like thermal expansion and elongation or contraction due to inertial forces, self-weight, and wellbore pressure. Also, the downhole conditions (e.g., temperature, internal forces, self-weight, and wellbore pressure) can cause the work string to be overloaded and become damaged if fast or sudden manipulations occur. The dynamic model implemented with the downhole position and velocity controller may be configured to account for the downhole forces experienced by the work string due to downhole conditions to provide the position and velocity movements that should occur at the surface to achieve the desired position and velocity movements downhole.

Downhole positioning control system with force compensation

Some examples can be implemented to determine electric submersible pump efficiency to estimate downhole parameters. At a computer system, a load signal on an in-well type electric submersible pump to transfer fluid through a wellbore is received. At the computer system, a load represented by the received load signal and an expected load on the pump is compared. A difference between the load represented by the received load signal and the expected load based on comparing the load represented by the received load signal and the expected load on the pump is identified.

Electric submersible pump efficiency to estimate downhole parameters

An example method for removal of stick-slip vibrations may comprise receiving a command directed to a controllable element of a drilling assembly. A smooth trajectory profile may be generated based, at least in part, on the command. A frictional torque value for a drill bit of the drilling assembly may be determined. The example method may further include generating a control signal based, at least in part, on the trajectory profile, the frictional torque value, and a model of the drilling assembly, and transmitting the control signal to the controllable element.

Locating while drilling systems and methods are disclosed. Some method embodiments include drilling a borehole with a bottom-hole assembly (BHA attached to a drill bit, pausing the drilling to determine a survey position of the bit, obtaining measurements with BHA sensors while drilling, processing the BHA sensor measurements with a model while drilling to track a current position of the bit relative to the survey position, the model accounting for deformation of the BHA, and steering the BHA based on the current position of the bit.

Continuous locating while drilling

A directional drilling system includes a bottomhole assembly having a drill bit and a steering tool configured to adjust a drilling direction in real-time. The system also includes a first feedback loop that provides a first steering control signal to the steering tool, and a second feedback loop that provides a second steering control signal to the steering tool. The system also includes a set of sensors to measure at least one of strain and movement at one or more points along the bottom-hole assembly during drilling, wherein the first and second steering control signals are based in part on the strain or movement measurements.
