A turbocharger includes a housing and a rotary assembly disposed within the housing and including a turbine wheel and a compressor wheel attached to one another by a shaft. A bearing is disposed in the housing and rotatably supports the shaft. The bearing includes a pair of inner bearing surfaces that engage opposite ends of the shaft and a pair of outer bearing surfaces that engage the housing. The pair of inner bearing surfaces have a first axial dimension and the pair of outer bearing surfaces have a second axial dimension that is smaller than the first axial dimension.

Turbocharger bearing with improved durability and noise reduction

Disclosed are journal bearing assemblies, methods for making and methods for using journal bearing assemblies, and motor vehicles employing journal bearing assemblies. A disclosed friction-reducing journal bearing assembly includes a first (upper) bearing shell insert and a second (lower) bearing shell insert. Each insert mounts inside a bore, e.g., of an engine block or piston connecting rod, and has an arcuate inner-diameter (ID) surface. These ID surfaces are adjoined at opposing ends thereof to cooperatively define a cylindrical channel that receives therethrough a journal portion of a shaft (e.g., crankshaft or crank pin). The inner-diameter and/or outer-diameter (OD) surface of the second insert includes one or more axially elongated and/or one or more axially angled grooves, each of which extends only partially across the axial width of the shell insert. The lower insert may be fabricated with two axially elongated grooves extending generally orthogonally from respective edges of the insert.

Journal bearings with surface features for improved bearing oil supply

A turbocharger including a housing and a rotary assembly disposed within the housing and including a turbine wheel and a compressor wheel attached to one another by a shaft. The rotary assembly being subject to aero-load in a lateral direction. A bearing is disposed in the housing and rotatably supports the shaft, the bearing including an inner bearing surface that engages the shaft and an outer bearing surface that engages the housing, the outer bearing surface having a pair of axially extending recessed grooves extending at least partially along the bearing. The pair of axially extending grooves being located perpendicular to the aero-load direction.

Turbo-charger bearing

An improved thrust bearing for a turbocharger includes a first bearing surface, a second bearing surface, an internal passageway, a primary pad, and a plurality of secondary pads. The internal passageway fluidly connects the first and second bearing surfaces. The primary pad may be defined on the first bearing surface. The primary pad further defines a first aperture in fluid communication with the internal passageway and an oil feed defined in a turbocharger housing. The plurality of secondary pads may also be defined on the first bearing surface. Each secondary pad in the plurality of secondary pads may include a secondary surface area which is smaller than the primary surface area of the primary pad.

Turbocharger thrust bearing

A turbocharger is provided including a housing with a turbine and a compressor disposed in the housing. A central shaft is connected between the turbine and the compressor and is rotatably supported by a first journal bearing disposed within the housing at a location adjacent to the turbine and a second journal bearing disposed within the housing at a location adjacent to the compressor. A spacer is disposed directly between and adjacent to the first journal bearing and the second journal bearing and is neither coupled to or integrally formed with the first journal bearing.

Turbocharger journal bearing system

A turbocharger for an internal combustion engine includes a bearing housing and a bearing bore defined by the bearing housing. The bearing bore has an annular bearing groove configured to receive a fluid. A journal bearing is disposed within the bore such that the annular bearing groove encircles the journal bearing and feeds the fluid thereto. The turbocharger also includes a rotating assembly having a shaft with a turbine wheel and a compressor wheel. The shaft has a longitudinal axis and is supported by the journal bearing for rotation within the bore about the axis. The annular bearing groove is characterized by a trapezoidal shape in a cross-sectional view of the bearing bore taken along and through the longitudinal axis. The trapezoidal shape is configured to generate Taylor vortices in the fluid for capturing debris carried by the fluid and keeping the debris from being fed to the journal bearing.

Turbocharger bearing housing oil groove

An intake air flow control assembly includes an actuator, a valve shaft, a first valve member and a drive member. The actuator includes a drive shaft defining a first rotational axis. The valve shaft defines a second rotational axis. The first valve member is fixed for rotation with the valve shaft and adjusts air flow from an intake manifold to an engine intake port. The drive member is engaged with the drive shaft and the valve shaft. The drive member extends around an outer circumference of the drive shaft and around an outer circumference of the valve shaft. The drive shaft is rotatable in first and second rotational directions opposite one another to rotate the valve shaft via the drive member and rotationally displace the first valve member.

Engine including intake air flow control assembly

An internal combustion engine is provided having a cylinder case with at least one cylinder bore wall defining at least one cylinder bore. At least one piston is reciprocally movable within the at least one cylinder bore. The at least one piston includes at least one skirt portion preferably having a barrel-shaped profile. The cylinder bore wall has an oleophobic characteristic, while the at least one skirt portion has an oleophilic characteristic. The oleophobic and oleophilic characteristic is produced by at least one of coating and machining the at least one cylinder bore wall and the at least one skirt portion, respectively.

An engine control system comprises a coolant temperature weighting module that generates a weighting signal based on coolant temperature. A composite temperature generating module generates a composite temperature based on the coolant temperature, an oil temperature and the weighting signal. A delta friction torque module calculates delta friction torque of an engine based on the composite temperature. An engine operating parameter module that adjusts an engine operating parameter based on the delta friction torque.

Systems and methods for predicting engine delta friction torque using both coolant and oil temperature

Disclosed is a piston having a top chamfer functioning as an oil reservoir, the top chamfer designed to reduce piston noise and friction. The top chamfer partially defines a tapered volume or cavity configured to enhance oil flow to the middle portions of the piston skirt so as to increase lubrication during piston up stroke and thereby reduce piston noise and friction.
