A method for independent real and reactive power flow control without sensing receiving end voltage in a power flow controller (PFC) includes calculating a first reference phase angle, calculating a first reference voltage, modifying the first reference phase angle calculated using a first phasor modifier, calculating a first reference current for a first terminal, calculating a second reference phase angle for current through the first terminal, calculating a second reference voltage across a second CMI by subtracting voltages at the first terminal and a second terminal, and controlling the first CMI and the second CMI for controlling the power flow through the PFC.

Method for independent real and reactive power flow control using locally available parameters

A system and a method for optimizing fundamental frequency modulation in a cascaded multilevel inverter (CMI) are provided. The CMI includes at least a first H-bridge module and a second H-bridge module connected in series with the first H-bridge module. The first H-bridge module is operated according to a first duty cycle and the second H-bridge module is operated according to a second duty cycle. The first duty cycle is greater than the second duty cycle. The first and second H-bridge modules are controlled utilizing fundamental frequency modulation. A portion of the first duty cycle is transferred to the second duty cycle thereby optimizing fundamental frequency modulation by at least improving power sharing between the first and second H-bridge modules and improving equalization of DC capacitor currents and voltage ripples while maintaining the same fundamental modulation to the output voltage waveform.

System and method for optimizing fundamental frequency modulation for a cascaded multilevel inverter

An improved gate drive circuit is provided for a power device, such as a transistor. The gate driver circuit may include: a current control circuit; a first secondary current source that is used to control the switching transient during turn off of the power transistor and a second secondary current source that is used to control the switching transient during turn on of the power transistor. In operation, the current control circuit operates, during turn on of the power transistor, to source a gate drive current to a control node of the power transistor and, during turn off of the power transistor, to sink a gate drive current from the control node of the power transistor. The first and second secondary current sources adjust the gate drive current to control the voltage or current rate of change and thereby the overshoot during the switching transient.

High efficiency gate drive circuit for power transistors

A power control device includes a first terminal, a second terminal connected to a transmission line, a first cascade multilevel inverter (CMI) and a second CMI. The first CMI is connected to the second terminal. The second CMI connected in series between the first terminal and the second terminal.

Transformer-less unified power flow controller

A switching frequency multiplier inverter for low inductance machines that uses parallel connection of switches and each switch is independently controlled according to a pulse width modulation scheme. The effective switching frequency is multiplied by the number of switches connected in parallel while each individual switch operates within its limit of switching frequency. This technique can also be used for other power converters such as DC/DC, AC/DC converters.

An impedance source power converter includes a power source, a main converter circuit and an impedance network. The main converter circuit is coupled to a load and the impedance network couples the power source to the main converter circuit. The impedance network is configured such that the main converter circuit is adapted to perform both buck conversion and boost conversion.

An auxiliary quasi-resonant dc tank (AQRDCT) power converter with fast current charging, voltage balancing (or charging), and voltage clamping circuits is provided for achieving soft-switched power conversion. The present invention is an improvement of the invention taught in U.S. Pat. No. 6,111,770, herein incorporated by reference. The present invention provides faster current charging to the resonant inductor, thus minimizing delay time of the pulse width modulation (PWM) due to the soft-switching process. The new AQRDCT converter includes three tank capacitors or power supplies to achieve the faster current charging and minimize the soft-switching time delay. The new AQRDCT converter further includes a voltage balancing circuit to charge and discharge the three tank capacitors so that additional isolated power supplies from the utility line are not needed. A voltage clamping circuit is also included for clamping voltage surge due to the reverse recovery of diodes.

Auxiliary quasi-resonant dc tank electrical power converter

First and second networks of switching devices, each of which are an insulated gate bipolar transistor with an intrinsic reverse-biased clamping diode, are controlled to selectively connect a sinusoidal input voltage and an output to different nodes within a series of capacitors during different portions of input and output voltage cycles to produce a stepped sinusoidal output voltage. The topology requires a low part count, produces relatively low harmonics without filtering when powering artificial lift equipment within a borehole, and scales up to medium voltages without a step-up transformer. During variable speed operation of the lift equipment, optimized switching angles for controlling the switching devices during the voltage cycles may be selected based on modulation producing the desired speed and phase measurements.

Low harmonic diode clamped converter/inverter

An isolated and soft-switched power converter is used for DC/DC and DC/DC/AC power conversion. The power converter includes two resonant tank circuits coupled back-to-back through an isolation transformer. Each resonant tank circuit includes a pair of resonant capacitors connected in series as a resonant leg, a pair of tank capacitors connected in series as a tank leg, and a pair of switching devices with anti-parallel clamping diodes coupled in series as resonant switches and clamping devices for the resonant leg. The power converter is well suited for DC/DC and DC/DC/AC power conversion applications in which high-voltage isolation, DC to DC voltage boost, bidirectional power flow, and a minimal number of conventional switching components are important design objectives. For example, the power converter is especially well suited to electric vehicle applications and load-side electric generation and storage systems, and other applications in which these objectives are important. The power converter may be used for many different applications, including electric vehicles, hybrid combustion/electric vehicles, fuel-cell powered vehicles with low-voltage starting, remote power sources utilizing low-voltage DC power sources, such as photovoltaics and others, electric power backup systems, and load-side electric storage and generation systems.
