Techniques are described for wireless communication. One method includes identifying a priority parameter associated with data to be transmitted on an uplink carrier; selecting, based at least in part on the identified priority parameter, between a first type of message for requesting uplink resources in a shared radio frequency spectrum band or a dedicated radio frequency spectrum band, or a second type of message for requesting uplink resources in the dedicated radio frequency spectrum band; and transmitting the selected type of message.

Various embodiments of a deep learning (DL)-based face perception engine for constructing, providing, and applying a highly-personalized face perception model for an individual through a deep learning process are disclosed. In some embodiments, a disclosed face perception engine includes a deep neural network configured for training a personalized face perception model for a unique individual based on a standard set of training images and a corresponding set of decisions on the set of training images provided by the unique individual. When sufficiently trained using the standard set of training images and the corresponding set of decisions, the personalized face perception model for the unique individual perceives a new face photo/image as if through the eyes of that unique individual. Hence, the trained face perception model can be used an 'agent' or 'representative' of the associated person in making very personal decisions, such as to decide if a given face photo/image includes a desirable face in the eyes of that person.

Techniques are described for managing QoS parameters of a bearer for which at least a portion of bearer data is served over a WLAN radio access technology. According to these techniques, a first device may identify a first set of one or more QoS parameters for serving a bearer over a wireless wide area network (WWAN). However, an eNB selects an RI and a transmission rate for interference-limited subframes based on what the UE can sustain instead of based only on the RI reported by the UE.

Techniques for improving uplink throughput of UE uplink transmissions are disclosed. The UE may communicate with an eNB over an LTE wireless link using a first radio, and with a WLAN access point over a WLAN wireless link using a second radio. The UE may schedule a first portion of uplink data from an aggregating layer of the UE for transmission over the WLAN wireless link during a scheduling window, the scheduling based on an availability of access to the LTE wireless link. The UE may transmit the first portion of the uplink data over the WLAN wireless link during the scheduling window. The aggregation of the LTE wireless link with the WLAN wireless link may allow the UE to transmit uplink data from the aggregating layer of the UE over both the LTE wireless link or the WLAN wireless link.

A tuned mass damper for sound-dampening brake squeal noise is located within a hole formed in a brake component such as a backplate supporting a brake pad. The location of the hole and the weight and geometry of the tuned mass damper are tailored to provide effective damping for the particular frequencies that are to be eliminated in the brake system. Locating the tuned mass damper inside of a hole in the component has packaging and manufacturing advantages, and results in a tuned mass damper that is less susceptible to damage when in use. The hole may be blind, the bottom of the hole being thin enough to serve as a spring member to which a vibration damping mass is attached. In one embodiment, the tuned mass damper is a module adapted for insertion into the hole in the brake backplate. Contact between the module and inner surfaces of the hole transfers mechanical vibration of the backplate to the tuned mass damper.

A brake assembly includes a rotor and at least one backplate supporting a brake pad for frictionally engaging the rotor for braking. A sheet metal plate is operatively connected to the back plate. The sheet metal plate has a groove cut therethrough to form at least one tuning fork member. A damping material is engaged with the at least one tuning fork member for damping energy associated with vibrations of the tuning fork member, thereby sound-dampening brake squeal noise.

A method of using a microscopic digital imaging strain gauge includes the steps of creating a mark pattern on an object surface, positioning an image sensing device over the mark pattern, magnifying the mark pattern with a magnification lens, taking a first magnified image of the mark pattern with the image sensing device, applying a load to the object surface, taking a second magnified image of the mark pattern, and utilizing a processor to calculate the strain as derived from the first and second magnified images.

A measurement system (10) for accurately measuring the surface geometry of a part in three dimensions includes a laser (22) for emitting a laser beam (20). An objective lens (18) receives the laser beam (20) and expands the received laser beam (20) into a diverged beam. A liquid crystal system (16) is disposed in front of the objective lens (18) with respect to the laser (22) for receiving the diverged beam. The liquid crystal system (16) receives the diverged beam and generates at least one fringe pattern (24) on a surface of a three dimensional part which is to be measured. A computer (12) is in communication with the liquid crystal system (16) to control the pitch and phase of the fringe pattern (24).

An apparatus and method for measuring full-field contact force distribution of a tire. A transparent, elastically deformable contact member having an elasticity substantially less than the elasticity of the tire is supported by a transparent rigid support member. As the tire is pressed into the contact member, the contact member deforms. Laser light illuminates the tire-contact member interface and is reflected to an imaging device which measures the displacement of the tire-contact member interface using interferometry principles. Because the elasticity of the contact member is known, the contact force distribution of the tire may be calculated. The apparatus and method may also be used to measure three-dimensional as well as dynamic contact force displacement.
