An electrical chain-link converter system includes a converter phase leg for converting a plurality of DC electrical currents from a plurality of DC power sources to an AC current of an electrical power distribution network. The phase leg includes a plurality of serially connected converter cells each of which is connected to a respective power source of the plurality of DC power sources. The system also includes a control unit associated with the phase leg, the control unit including a processor; and a storage unit storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the control unit to, for each of the converter cells: obtain a dedicated voltage reference for the converter cell; and transmit the voltage reference to the converter cell.

Chain-link converter system with different DC-sources and method for operation

A reverse-conducting insulated gate bipolar transistor, particularly a bi-mode insulated gate transistor, is controlled by responding to an ON command by applying high-level gate voltage for a first period, during which a current is fed into a connection point, from which it flows either through the RC-IGBT or along a different path. Based hereon, it is determined whether the RC-IGBT conducts in its forward/IGBT or reverse/diode mode, and the RC-IGBT is either driven at high or low gate voltage. Subsequent conduction mode changes may be monitored in the same way, and the gate voltage may be adjusted accordingly. A special turn-off procedure may be applied in response to an OFF command in cases where the RC-IGBT conducts in the reverse mode, wherein a high-level pulse is applied for a second period before the gate voltage goes down to turn-off level.

A modular voltage source converter () comprises a plurality of cells conformal to a basic cell design comprising a first and a second terminal, a capacitor and at least two switches arranged in a half-bridge or full-bridge configuration. In the converter, a first group is formed by a number n of cells (-, k=1, n) connected serially at their terminals, and a second group is formed by an equal number n of cells (-k, k=1, n) connected serially at their terminals. The terminals of the cells (-) in said first group are connected, via a resistive or inductive connection element (-), to the terminals of corresponding cells (-) in said second group.
