A dilation introducer for orthopedic surgery is provided for minimally invasive access for insertion of an intervertebral implant. The dilation introducer may be used to provide an access position through Kambin's triangle from a posterolateral approach. A first dilator tube with a first longitudinal axis is provided. An access cannula may be introduced over the first dilator tube. A drill may be inserted through the access cannula and used to perform a foraminoplasty. Surgical instruments may pass through the access cannula to operate on an intervertebral disc and/or insert an intervertebral implant.

Method and apparatus for minimally invasive insertion of intervertebral implants

Disclosed herein are systems and methods for dilating tissue for placement of a pedicle screw without the use of guide wires. The tissue dilation system includes, generally, a stylet and trocar which are used for the initial placement of the tissue dilation system. A second dilator is passed over the first. A second dilator is passed over the first dilator, and further includes a serrated edge for engaging with a target surface. The second dilator may be secured to the target surface by the serrated edge alone, or may additional be secured using one or more temporary fixation pins, which operably couple to the second dilator.

Tissue dilation system and methods of use

A facet screw system and method includes an implant assembly having a screw with a removable head, a locking nut, and a collet. An insertion instrument is used to insert the screw, compress the facet joint, locks the implant, and breaks off the head of the screw providing a lower profile implant.

A retractor system includes first and second fixation pins and a retractor assembly including first and second retractor bodies. Each of the first and second retractor bodies includes a main panel and extension panels extending from the main panel. Each of the first and second retractor bodies is transitionable between a first configuration, in which, each of the first and second retractor bodies is substantially flat, and a second configuration, in which, each of the first and second retractor bodies has a substantially U-shaped profile such that the extension panels oppose each other. The extension panels of the first retractor body are configured to selectively overlap the respective extension panels of the second retractor body when the first and second retractor bodies are in the second configuration.

Spinal retractor and method of use therefor

An occipital fixation assembly is provided. The occipital fixation assembly includes a first mounting plate configured for placement within a sinus cavity adjacent a rear portion of a skull of a patient. A threaded post extends from the first mounting plate. A coupling member includes an aperture configured to receive the threaded post therethrough. The coupling member includes an offset extension configured to support a surgical rod thereon. A fixation nut configured to threadably engage the threaded post of the first mounting plate is rotatable about the threaded post and translatable therealong. The fixation nut is rotatable with respect to the first mounting plate and the coupling member such that rotation of the fixation nut in a predetermined direction brings the first mounting plate and the coupling member toward one another and into secured engagement with the skull of a patient.

Occipital fixation assembly, system and method for attaching the same

A surgical rod scorer is provided. The surgical rod scorer includes a pair of elongated shaft members that are pivotably coupled to one another and movable from a spaced-apart configuration to an approximated configuration. Each of the shaft members includes a handle member that is configured for gripping by a user and jaw member that is configured to support respective first and second cutting assemblies thereon. The first and second cutting assemblies each include one or more cutting elements thereon configured and dimensioned to score surgical rod when the jaw members are in the approximated configuration and rotated about the surgical rod.

Surgical rod scorer and method of use of the same

A retractor assembly for defining a working channel to a surgical site for conducting minimally invasive spinal surgery includes a plurality of relatively articulable components. Temporary interconnections are formed between adjacent sidewalls of the components to hold the components in a de sired configuration, such as in a closed triangular form. The components are articulable relative to each other for adjusting the working channel or for performing surgical functions.

Stand-alone access system for minimally invasive spinal surgery

A surgical access device including a frame, first and second supports, and first and second retractor blades releasably coupled with the first and second supports, respectively. The frame has first and second arms. The first support is releasably coupled with the first and second arms. The second support is slidably mounted on the first and second arms. The second support is movable between a first position with the retractor blades in close cooperative position and a spaced apart position with respect to the first support. The first and second retractor blades each have a distal end portion configured and adapted to engage a vertebral body. In one method of use, the retractor is inserted through an incision in first orientation with the blades in close approximation and rotated approximately 90&#xb0;, before spreading the retractor blades to retract tissue.
