A micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS) device is disclosed that is configured to operate as a reservoir computer including performing sensing and computing co-locally. The MEMS device includes circuitry for: generating a modulated input signal based on an input signal; generating a MEMS deflection signal based on the modulated input signal and a time-delayed MEMS deflection signal; sampling the MEMS deflection signal N times during a time internal T to generate a MEMS deflection matrix, wherein MEMS deflection matrix has a size M×N, wherein N corresponds to a number of virtual nodes of the reservoir computer and M is a number of time steps of time interval T; receiving a trained weight matrix, wherein the trained weight matrix is trained by linear regression; and multiplying the MEMS deflection matrix by the trained weight matrix to generate an output signal that classifies the input signal.

Artificial intelligence-based analog sensors and wearable devices incorporating the same

A continuous-time recurrent neural network (CTRNN) is described that exploits the nonlinear dynamics of micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) devices to model a neuron in accordance with a neuron rate model that is the basis for dynamic field theory. Each MEMS device in the CTRNN is configured to simulate a neuron population by exploiting the characteristics of bi-stability and hysteresis inherent in certain MEMS device structures. In an embodiment, the MEMS device is a microbeam or cantilevered microbeam device that is excited with an alternating current (AC) voltage at or near an electrical resonance frequency associated with the MEMS device. In another embodiment, the MEMS device is an arched microbeam device that is excited with a direct current voltage and exhibits snap-through behavior due to the physical design of the structure. A CTRNN can be implemented using a number of MEMS devices that are interconnected, the connections associated with varying connection coefficients.

Neuromorphic computing using electrostatic MEMS devices

Disclosed are exemplary embodiments of apparatus and methods for remote testing of controllers such as thermostats, to detect incorrect climate control system configuration parameters. In an exemplary embodiment, a mobile device wirelessly connects with a remote thermostat and sends signal(s) to the thermostat instructing the thermostat to perform climate control function(s) in predefined sequence(s). The mobile device receives signal(s) from the thermostat indicating whether the thermostat is performing the climate control function(s) in accordance with the sent signal(s). Based on the signal(s) received from the thermostat, the mobile device determines whether the thermostat is configured with accurate climate control system configuration parameters.

Systems and methods that detect a loss of charge associated with a climate controlled environment are described in the present disclosure. In various embodiments, a controller receives operating condition parameters associated with a climate-controlled environment. The controller determines whether a compressor is operating in a first mode of operation or a second mode of operation. The controller applies a first model to the operating condition parameters when the compressor is operating in the first mode of operation to represent a loss of charge associated with the climate-controlled environment and applies a second model to the operating condition parameters when the compressor is operating in the second mode of operation to represent the loss of charge associated with the climate-controlled environment.

Systems and methods to amplify the response of a MEMS micro-oscillator by driving the MEMS device at its electrical and mechanical resonance frequencies, simultaneously. This enhances the MEMS mechanical sensitivity to electrical excitation and increases the voltage across the MEMS capacitor. Moreover, using a combination of two input signals at different frequencies (beat signal) may be used to achieve double resonance in any MEMS device, even if its natural frequency is far from its electrical resonance.

Systems and methods for reducing the actuation voltage for electrostatic MEMS devices

A system and method for a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system of a building is provided. A monitoring device installed at the building is configured to measure a current supplied to the HVAC system and transmit current data based on the measured current. The monitoring system includes a monitoring server, located remotely from the building, configured to receive the transmitted current data and, based on the received current data, determine an average motor current over a predetermined time period and determine whether a failure has occurred in an air filter of the HVAC system based on a comparison of the average motor current with a predetermined threshold. The monitoring server generates a notification based on the comparison indicating that the failure has occurred in the air filter.

An expectation module determines an expected average power consumption of a heat pump for a predetermined period as a function of indoor and outdoor temperatures of the building during the predetermined period. A difference module determines a power difference between an average power consumption of the heat pump during the predetermined period and the expected average power consumption of the heat pump for the predetermined period. A grade determination module determines a grade of the heat pump for the predetermined period based on the power difference of the predetermined period. A reporting module generates a displayable report including the grade of the heat pump for the predetermined period.

Heat pump and air conditioning grading systems and methods

A heat-pump circuit may include an indoor heat exchanger, an outdoor heat exchanger, a compressor adapted to circulate a working fluid between the indoor and outdoor heat exchangers, and an expansion device disposed between the indoor and outdoor heat exchangers. A monitor for the heat-pump system may include a return-air temperature sensor, a supply-air temperature sensor, and a processor. The return-air temperature sensor may be adapted to measure a first air temperature of air upstream of the indoor heat exchanger. The supply-air temperature sensor may be adapted to measure a second air temperature of air downstream of the indoor heat exchanger. The processor may be in communication with the return-air temperature sensor and the supply-air temperature sensor. The processor may be programmed to determine a working-fluid-charge condition of the heat-pump system based on the first and second air temperatures.

A difference module determines differences between an outdoor ambient temperature and an indoor temperature, determines a first average of the differences, and determines a second average of the differences. A storing module stores a first data point, the first data point including the first average and a first total run time of a heating, ventilation, and/or air conditioning (HVAC) system, and stores a second data point, the second data point including the second average and a second total run time of the HVAC system. A fitting module fits a line to the first and second data points. An envelope grading module generates a grade for an exterior envelope of a building based on a first characteristic of the line. An interior grading module generates a grade for an interior of the building based on a second characteristic of the line. A reporting module generates a displayable report for the building including the grade of the exterior envelope and the grade of the interior of the building.

Building envelope and interior grading systems and methods

A system and method for monitoring a heating, ventilation, or air conditioning (HVAC) system of a building is provided. A monitoring server, located remotely from the building, receives operating parameter data from a monitoring device at the building that measures an operating parameter of the HVAC system. The monitoring server generates a plurality of data clusters from the operating parameter data, each data cluster corresponding to operating parameter data generated during steady-state operation of the HVAC system. The monitoring server calculates an average operating parameter value for each data cluster. The monitoring server calculates normalized operating parameter values based on normalizing the average operating parameter values for the data clusters over a predetermined normalization time period. The monitoring server compares the normalized operating parameter values with a threshold. The monitoring server determine whether an air filter of the HVAC system needs to be replaced based on the comparison and generates a notification based on the determination indicating that the air filter needs to be replaced.

HVAC system air filter diagnostics and monitoring

A monitoring system for an HVAC system of a building includes a monitoring server located remotely from the building. The monitoring server receives, from a device installed at the building, (i) time-domain current data based on a measured aggregate current supplied to a plurality of components of the HVAC system, and (ii) data based on frequency-domain current data of the measured aggregate current. Based on the received data, the monitoring server accesses (i) whether a failure has occurred in a first component of the plurality of components and (ii) generates a preliminary advisory in response to determining that the failure has occurred. The monitoring server compares the preliminary advisory to a threshold value based on data stored from prior advisories. If the preliminary advisory is on a first side of the threshold value, the monitoring server provides the preliminary advisory as a first advisory to a technician for review.
