An ion pulse generator () includes a triboelectric generator (), an ion emitter () and a conductive surface (). The triboelectric generator () includes a first electrode (), a spaced apart second electrode () and a first triboelectric layer (). The triboelectric generator () generates a predetermined amount of charge as a result of relative movement of the first triboelectric layer (). The ion emitter () is electrically coupled to the first electrode (). The conductive surface () is electrically coupled to the second electrode () and is spaced apart from the ion emitter () at a predetermined distance. Generation of the predetermined amount of charge causes formation of ions between the ion emitter () and the conductive surface ().

Rational nano-coulomb ionization

A method of detecting serous ovarian cancer, particularly early stage serous ovarian cancer is described. The method uses up to sixteen compounds found in the blood serum of a person, and determines that changes of some portion of these sixteen compounds can determine the presence of serous ovarian cancer in a women with up to 100% accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity.

By connecting the Bradbury-Nielson gate (BNG) directly to a driver without a transmission line, distortion of the voltage waveform experienced a the BNG are much reduced. Because the magnitude of the modulation defects grows as the applied modulation voltage is increased, Bradbury-Nielson gates with finer wire spacing such as 100 microns, and operating at 10 to 15 V, significantly better signal-to-noise ratios are achieved. HT-TOFMS data were also post processed using an exact knowledge of the modulation defects.
