A heat exchanger has a fluid passage sharing a wall with a cooling fluid passage adjacent to the passage. The thermally conductive wall allows heat to be transferred from the fluid into the cooling fluid passage. The passage additionally has a set of at least one airfoil pin extending into the passage.

An example drive train assembly for a power conversion system includes a first sprocket which defines an axis of rotation, at least two secondary sprockets adjacent to the first sprocket and at least one belt. The axis of rotation lies outside of an area defined by the belt. The belt is operable to transfer mechanical power between the first sprocket and the two secondary sprockets in response to a rotation of the first sprocket about the axis of rotation. The belt defines a first side having one of a first plurality of notches and a first plurality of teeth and an opposing second side having one of a second plurality of notches and a second plurality of teeth. The first sprocket defines the other of the first plurality of notches and the first plurality of teeth and the secondary sprockets define the other of the second plurality of notches and the second plurality of teeth. The first plurality of teeth engage the first plurality of notches and the second plurality of teeth engage the second plurality of notches, whereby rotation of the first sprocket about the axis of rotation engages the first plurality of teeth with the first plurality of notches and the second plurality of teeth with the second plurality of notches.

A wind turbine includes a nacelle support structure rotationally mounted to a tower through a yaw bearing for rotation about a yaw axis. A hollow shaft is rotationally mounted to the nacelle support structure through a rotor bearing for rotation about a rotor axis of rotation and a blade support body is mounted to the hollow shaft, the blade support body supports either of a two-bladed rotor system and a three-bladed rotor system, the two-bladed rotor system and the three-bladed rotor system have essentially equal solidity.

A turbine blade assembly includes an outboard blade section that folds onto an inboard blade section at a hinge located between the sections. When the outboard blade section is rotating to a folded position a longitudinal axis of the outboard blade section is transverse to a longitudinal axis of the inboard blade section. When the outboard blade section is in a fully folded position, the axes are parallel. The method of folding the outboard blade section includes adjusting the pitch of the turbine blade while it is rotating. Adjusting the pitch changes the pressure on a non-hinge side of the turbine blade and results in the outboard blade section folding with respect to the inboard blade section.

Wind power system for energy production

A wind turbine system includes a shaft, a rotor for driving the shaft, and a first fluidic teeter control assembly. The rotor includes a first blade engaged to the shaft by a hub, and has a degree of freedom to pivot relative to the shaft. A first teeter angle is defined between an instantaneous position of the first blade and a time-averaged plane of rotation of the first blade. The first fluidic teeter control assembly is engaged between the rotor and the shaft for providing a first dynamic teeter restraining force as a function of the first teeter angle and a fluidic resistance. The first dynamic restraining force is relatively low when the first teeter angle is within a first teeter operation range, and the first dynamic restraining force is higher when the first teeter angle is outside that range.

In an air mixing arrangement wherein a primary fluid is introduced through an opening in a wall to be mixed with a secondary fluid flowing along the wall surface, the opening is airfoil shaped with its leading edge being orientated at an attack angle with respect to the secondary fluid flow stream to enhance penetration and dispersion of the primary fluid stream into the secondary fluid stream. The airfoil shaped opening is selectively positioned such that its angle of attack provides the desired lift to optimize the mixing of the two streams for the particular application. Embodiments of the arrangement can comprise a collar around the openings, multiple openings that comprise a larger opening and a smaller opening positioned downstream, pairs of openings and associated collars symmetric relationship, and nozzles on the inner side of the wall.

Arrangement for controlling fluid jets injected into a fluid stream

A wind power energy system includes a compression system that produces pressurized air with a first temperature that is received by a storage system at a second temperature that is approximately equal to the first temperature. The wind power energy system is insulated with about ten centimeters of glass-wool insulation to create an essentially adiabatic system. The pressurized air is utilized by a generator and generate electricity for a power grid. The generator also includes a combustion engine input. A control system detects fluctuation in wind power and commands the combustion engine to provide an appropriate amount of input energy to the generator such that the sum of the wind energy and combustion engine inputs produces a predetermined amount of electrical output by the generator.

A rotor hub fairing system includes an upper hub fairing, a lower hub fairing and a shaft fairing therebetween. The rotor hub fairing system is attached to the counter-rotating, coaxial rotor system through a bearing arrangement such that the shaft fairing may be positioned at an azimuthal position about the main rotor axis of rotation relative the airframe by a de-rotation system. The de-rotation system controls the position of the shaft fairing about the axis of rotation such that the shaft fairing is prevented from rotating freely in unison with either shaft as may otherwise result during some flight regimes.

The low friction material () facilitates the teeth sliding along a guidance () but does not interfere with a desired engagement between the teeth() and corresponding teeth () on the driving member ().

A rotor hub fairing system includes an upper hub fairing, a lower hub fairing and a shaft fairing therebetween. The rotor hub fairing system reduces the total drag on a dual, counter-rotating, coaxial rotor system. Other aerodynamic structures may be mounted to the shaft fairing, hub fairings and airframe to facilitate flow around the upper and lower hub fairings to reduce flow separation and drag.

A horizontal axis wind-turbine includes a stationary support structure, a two-bladed rotor supported by the stationary support structure, and a hollow shaft rotationally attached to the stationary support structure through a bearing. Teeter hinges are spaced apart from each other and connect the hollow shaft to a rotor-hub to allow a teetering action of the rotor-hub with respect to the hollow shaft. The hollow shaft structurally supports the two-bladed rotor with respect to the stationary support structure, with a maximum outer diameter of the hollow shaft being greater than an outer diameter of the bearing.

The airfoil shaped opening is selectively positioned such that its angle of attack provides the desired lift to optimize the mixing of the two streams for the particular application. In one embodiment, a collar is provided around the opening to prevent the secondary fluid from contacting the surface of the wall during certain conditions of operation. Multiple openings maybe used such as the combination of a larger airfoil shaped opening with a smaller airfoil shaped opened positioned downstream thereof, or a round shaped opening placed upstream of an airfoil shaped opening. Pairs of openings and associated collars maybe placed in symmetric relationship so as to promote mixing in particular applications, and nozzles maybe placed on the inner side of wall to enhance the flow characteristics of the primary fluid.

Turbulators are disclosed for use in a high-stage generator for an exhaust-fired absorption chiller/heater. The turbulators are designed to minimize pressure drop across the turbulator, and thus minimize the efficiency loss to the exhaust source. One turbulator design has a number of flanges extending at a non-normal angle to a central web. Further, some of the flanges have cutout portions. The overall turbulator design is intended to minimize wake downstream of the turbulator blades, which could otherwise cause undesirable pressure drop. A second turbulator design incorporates flanges that extend at a normal angle relative to the central web, but wherein the flanges have a non-rectangular cross-sectional shape. Again, the goal of the turbulator designs here is to minimize wake, and potential pressure drop.

A rotor hub fairing system includes an upper hub fairing, a lower hub fairing and a shaft fairing therebetween. The rotor hub fairing system is sized and configured to reduce the overall drag on a dual, counter-rotating, coaxial rotor system. Preferably, the rotor hub fairing is fully integrated. The shaft fairing preferably includes a minimal thickness at the midsection to reduce drag with an increasing thickness adjacent the upper and lower hub fairings to reduce the flow separation on the hub fairing surfaces without overly excessive drag. Other aerodynamic structures, such as a horizontal splitter and/or a plurality of turning vanes may be mounted to the shaft fairing to facilitate flow around the upper and lower hub fairings to reduce flow separation and drag.
