A radio frequency receiver comprising a receiver module, an intermediate frequency ('IF') module, a synthesizer module and a controller module. The receiver module receives a radio frequency signal and provides a baseband in-phase signal and a baseband quadrature signal, eliminates a sideband of the in-phase and quadrature signals to create a first and a second signal, downconverts the first and second signal to a first and a second IF signal, and selects one of the first or second IF signals. The IF module receives the first or second IF signal, performs analog-to-digital conversion on the first or second IF signal, and demodulates the digitally converted IF signal. The synthesizer module receives a programmable reference signal, downconverts the reference signal to an IF feedback signal, downconverts the reference signal to a baseband feedback signal, provides the IF feedback signal to the IF module, and provides the baseband feedback signal to the receiver module. The controller module samples the digitally converted IF signal and provides the programmable reference signal to the synthesizer module to thereby provide a demodulated output signal.

Compact dual receiver architecture for point to point radio

The present invention provides a system for wide-range microwave communications over wireline networks. In an exemplary embodiment, a wide-range transceiver is made having pre-calibrated modular units including an IF radio processing card, an RF transmitter module, and an RF receiver module. Calibration factors are loaded into a memory (e.g., EEPROM) in each module during production. Certain additional calibration factors may also be loaded upon installation, such as a one time calibration for the type and length of cable connecting the RF unit to a remote SPU (signal processing unit). A processor in the RF unit is responsive to control signaling indicating a desired transmitter or receiver configuration (e.g., a particular frequency, bandwidth and modulation), to attenuate the signal in the transmitter/receiver path based on the predetermined calibration factors from the applicable modules. A method for calibrating the modules is also disclosed.

System of communication using microwave signals over wireline networks

The present invention provides systems and methods for calibrating a transceiver. In an exemplary embodiment, a method of operating a modular wide-range microwave transceiver, each having precalibrated modules, comprises the steps of coupling the precalibrated modules to form a radio unit, each module having a module memory storing predetermined calibration values, coupling the radio unit to a signal processing unit, determining a first attenuation value by adjusting a first transmit attenuator to achieve a predetermined target output of a AGC detector, and storing the first attenuation value in a first module memory, and when an RF loopback switch is coupled as part of the radio unit, determining a received signal level (RSL) correction factor and transmit output power correction factor based on a loop-back switch insertion loss.

Modular wide-range transceiver

The present invention provides a method, system, and processor instructions for calibrating a modular wide-range microwave communication system. In an exemplary embodiment, the system includes a first radio module including a calibration memory and radio circuitry (e.g., RF transmit, RF receive, and IF circuitry), a test signal processing system including a signal generator, measuring unit, memory, and a processor with instructions; and (for over-temperature tests) an oven or other controlled environment. The system is operable for controlling the signal generator to supply a series of test signals to the first radio module, for controlling the radio circuitry to set attenuation values, for controlling the measuring unit to determine characteristics (e.g., output power) of the radio circuitry based on the series of test signals, and for determining calibration values based on the series of test signals, attenuation values, and the determined characteristics of the radio circuitry, whereby the calibration values are stored in the calibration memory of the radio module. A modular wide-range transceiver using pre-calibrated modular units, and its operation, is also disclosed.
