A method supports service level agreement monitoring in a software defined network. The software defined network has forwarding elements and a software defined network controller for controlling the forwarding elements. Data flows are transmitted between a first end-path forwarding element, of the forwarding elements, and a second end-path forwarding element, of the forwarding elements, via at least one intermediate forwarding element, of the forwarding elements. The software defined network controller configures the intermediate forwarding element such that a probe triggering packet is generated based on local information of the intermediate forwarding element. The software defined network controller configures at least one of the first end-path forwarding element or the second end-path forwarding element such that an end-to-end probing is triggered based on receiving the probe triggering packet. The end-to-end probing is performed in order to detect a service level agreement violation.

Method for supporting service level agreement monitoring in a software defined network and corresponding software defined network

A method performs round-trip time determination between a source element and a target element, the source element is a forwarding element of a software defined network, which also includes a software defined network controller for controlling the forwarding elements. The method includes: instructing the source element to install a low priority detection rule, the low priority detection rule being triggerable by an incoming pong probe packet; instructing the source element to install at least one high priority detection rule having a timeout period, the high priority detection rule being triggerable by the incoming pong probe packet; instructing the source element to send a ping probe packet from the source element to the target element; deriving an estimate range for the round-trip time based on the detection rule being triggered by the pong probe packet received by the source element from the target element in response to the ping probe packet.

Method and software defined network controller for performing round-trip time determination between a source element and a target element

A software-defined networking ('SDN') capable forwarding switch includes ports for receiving and/or outputting data packets and a packet pipeline including a forwarding table. The forwarding table is configured to contain a number of flow table entries ('FTEs'), that determine the forwarding switch's configuration and control behavior. The switch further includes a control engine configured to manipulate the forwarding switch's forwarding tables by adding, updating, and/or removing FTEs in the forwarding tables. An FTE of a forwarding table is configured to contain a specific action part that includes an action instruction to create a control packet and to send it to the control engine. The control packet includes embedded control instructions that cause the control engine to change the forwarding switch's configuration and/or control behavior.

Software defined network forwarding

A method for introducing in-network services in an end-to-end communication path between two hosts includes: providing at least one middlebox entity and performing a registration procedure that includes registering the in-network services together with their respective service level agreements at the at least one middlebox entity; by at least one of the two hosts, sending a subscription for the in-network services to the at least one middlebox entity together with a policy list containing at least host-specific security requirements; by the at least one middlebox entity, evaluating potential conflicts between the host-specific security requirements and the service level agreements of the in-network services, and, in case no conflicts are detected, authenticating the in-network services; and inserting the authenticated in-network services within the end-to-end communication path and starting encrypted communication between the two hosts.

Method and system for introducing in-network services in an end-to-end communication path

A method for controlling a network. The network includes a plurality of forwarding elements (FE) connected with each other, one or more end hosts (EH) connected to one or more of the FE, and a controller for controlling the FE. The method includes installing packet processing rules for end-host control protocols (ECP) on the FE. When an ECP Request (ECPRQ) is received by an FE and the ECPRQ was not processed by the controller, the ECPRQ is provided to the controller and an ECP response is computed by the receiving FE based on extracted information from the ECPRQ mapped onto forwarding information based on mapping information if provided, otherwise if the ECPRQ was processed by the controller, the ECPRQ is forwarded according to forwarding information of the ECPRQ. When an ECP response (ECPR) is received by an FE, the ECPR is forwarded according to forwarding information.

Method for controlling a network

A method for service function chaining within an end-to-end path of a network connection between a source and destination node includes: executing, for a defined service function chain including an ordered sequence of network service functions, an address resolution process that translates names of the network service functions of the defined service function chain into their corresponding IP addresses. The address resolution process is performed at a name server of the destination node by a sequence of name server queries sent in succession to respective name servers of each of the selected network service functions of the defined service function chain in accordance with their order. Each of the name server queries is answered by a response from a name server of the respective network service function that includes IP addresses of selected instances of a respective network service function chosen by the respective name server according to predefined criteria.

Explicit service function chaining (SFC) using DNS extensions

A forwarding element includes a control engine and a forwarding table. The control engine includes a command template that includes a stateful interaction instruction. The forwarding table includes a rule entry that defines a match description and an action instruction. The forwarding element is configured to: receive a packet; determine packet attributes based on the packet; compare the packet attributes to the match description to determine whether there is a rule match, execute the action instruction in response to determining there is the rule match, which includes causing a trigger signal to be sent to the control engine, the trigger signal corresponding to the command template, and perform a stateful interaction on the packet according to the stateful interaction instruction in response to receiving the trigger signal.

Method and system for performing state-aware software defined networking

A method for acceleration of TCP connection establishment between a client and a server in a network includes deploying at least one stateful switch with packet generation capabilities in the network, and configuring the at least one stateful switch to receive a TCP SYN segment from the client, generate a sequence number in a manner coordinated with the server, answer, on behalf of the server, the TCP SYN segment received from the client with a corresponding SYN ACK segment containing the sequence number, forward the TCP SYN segment received from the client to the server, and act as a forwarding element for segments exchanged between the client and the server once a TCP connection is established such that no state relating to the TCP connection is held by the at least one stateful switch.

Method and system for acceleration of TCP connection establishment

A method for operating a software defined network (SDN) includes creating, by a software defined network controller, packet template information including a packet template and fill-in instructions, wherein the packet template defines a fill-in-the-blank packet. The method also includes sending, from the software defined network controller to a switch via a control channel, the packet template information and receiving, by the switch from a requestor, an incoming packet. The method further includes triggering, by determining that the incoming packet matches the packet template, the switch to generate an output packet, wherein the output packet is generated by using the fill-in instructions to fill in the fill-in-the-blank packet defined by the packet template. In addition, the method includes sending, by the switch to the requestor, the output packet.

A method provides an information centric network with a software defined network based on an information centric networking protocol on top of a physical network based on an internet protocol. A controller in the software defined network receives a first packet of an object request in the information centric network. The controller encodes a message ID indicating an object source of the object request into a header of the first packet. The controller installs forwarding rules on forwarding elements in the physical network such that further packets of the object request are forwarded according to the installed forwarding rules by the forwarding elements rewriting headers of the further packets.
