Selected freshwater or saltwater aquaculture systems are processed for the automatic removal of waste, ammonia, and pathogens while controlling temperature, oxygen, and feed amounts for obtaining maximum growth and survival at maximum aquatic species densities. A core platform treatment technology removes ammonia by combining chlorine with the ammonia to form chloramines, which are removed by catalytic activated carbon at a downstream filter station. Processing also removes potential pathogens by sterilizing and electrifying the water. The technology utilizes ammonia, chlorine, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), and flow sensors to electronically adjust the amount of chlorine needed to remove the existing ammonia. A control system utilizes temperature, dissolved oxygen, and image processing sensors to optimize heating, cooling, feeding, and aeration.

Ammonia control in a recirculating aquaculture system

A recirculating aquaculture system automatically controls ammonia, bacteria, solids, and feed quantity available to a captive species in a closed, water-based habitat. Functionally Independent processing loops operate in parallel on recirculating water streams, to control each of ammonia, bacteria, solids, and feed. The same or similar components, such as an electrolytic cell, may service one or more functional loops.

Recirculating aquaculture system and treatment method for aquatic species

A pressure vessel () accumulates an aqueous stream at elevated pressure and feeds it through a pressure retaining array of passages () in the bottom wall of a modular reaction chamber () that operates at atmospheric pressure. Spaced electrodes () treat the stream during upward flow to the open top of the chamber, where the treated stream overflows the chamber and falls into an inter-wall volume between the chamber and an outside housing (), washing foam from the housing and chamber as it exits. A housing cover () establishes headspace over the chamber to accommodate the overflow. The entire chamber () is removable from the housing () by loosening fasteners () in the bottom wall () and lifting it free, with no impediment due to clogging or corrosion outside the chamber.

Electrocoagulation chamber with atmospheric and pressurized flow regimes

Dielectric rails () support an electrode stack () that is compressed between end pressure plates (). The stack is composed of a dielectric spacer () forming a central spacer opening, separating a pair of electrode plates () that each have a different configuration of openings. A first electrode plate () of the pair has a central aperture, while the second electrode plate () of the pair has peripheral apertures. A compression device such as a hydraulic cylinder () compresses the stack, sliding the plates and spacers together to form a pressure-tight reaction chamber (). When the cylinder is released, any plate or spacer is readily removed from the stack for replacement or maintenance merely by lifting it off the rails. An electric potential can be applied to each electrode plate at a connecting ear (), which may be a one of the rail guides ().

Electrocoagulation reaction chamber and method

A stream of process liquid is treated while flowing through in a horizontally elongated chamber having an open top. Longitudinally elongated electrode blades are aligned with the longitudinal dimension of the chamber. An overhead disbursement chamber supplies a sweeping air stream over the open top of the chamber for removing foam and gas reaction by-products. The electrode blades are separated and held at a desired spacing by small portable guides located below and above the blades.
