Full color resolution of an image is realized by reconstructing an array of image data points from an image signal representing the image into a shifted array of pseudo pixels. The particular grid type of the array will dictate whether color recovery uses only vertical resolution, only horizontal resolution, vertical resolution followed by horizontal resolution, or horizontal resolution followed by vertical resolution. For each color channel, interpolation of missing color components is accomplished by first, taking a DCT of the image data points, then taking a modified IDCT of the DCT coefficients.

System and method for color recovery using discrete cosine transforms

The present invention is useful in taking images for identification and other purposes without the requirement of a photobooth, regardless of the background of the image. The original background of the image is replaced with a preselected background. Two IR images with different intensities of IR illumination in the foreground and background regions of the scene, respectively, are compared for light intensity differences between corresponding pixels of the two images to form a mask differentiating between the foreground and background regions of the image. The mask is then applied to a visible light image of the scene and the preselected background is used to replace the original background.

Background replacement for an image

A method and apparatus are presented for processing a set of image data points representing an image and being detected by a detector array having array elements wherein each array element is responsive to only one of a first or a second color. The method includes the steps of generating a color test pattern; detecting actual output responses for at least one neighborhood of detector array elements corresponding to pixels in the color test pattern, where each neighborhood has a given array element responsive to the first color; measuring the response to the color test pattern of the second color of the given array element of each neighborhood of array elements, that is responsive to the first color, to determine the actual color content in the color test pattern that is responsible for the actual output response of the given array element; determining a set of weighting values which relate the actual color contents of the test pattern with the actual output responses to the test pattern; storing the set of weighting values; detecting actual output responses for a subject image for each neighborhood; and determining actual color contents, responsive to the second color for the given array element of each neighborhood corresponding to pixels in the subject image, which actual color contents of the subject image are related to the actual output responses of the subject image by the stored weighting values.
