Described herein are polymer formulations for facilitating electrical stimulation of nasal or sinus tissue. The polymer formulations may be hydrogels that are prepared by a UV cross-linking process. The hydrogels may be included as a component of nasal stimulator devices that electrically stimulate the lacrimal gland to improve tear production and treat dry eye. Additionally, devices and methods for manufacturing the nasal stimulators, including shaping of the hydrogel, are described herein.

Benzyldimethyl&lcub;2-&lsqb;2-(p-1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutylphenoxy)ethoxy&rsqb;ethyl&rcub; ammonium chloride (BDT) forms the basis of contact lens solutions that are unusually effective at reducing the number and wide variety of pathogenic microorganisms that may infect rigid gas permeable or soft contact lenses. Furthermore, it has been discovered that natural occurring compounds alone and in combination with chemical agents can be used in ophthalmic solutions such as contact lens solution to enhance and complement their anti-microbial, cleaning and wetting activity or to reduce irritation to the eye. The basic contact lens solution comprises an effective concentration of BDT (preferably 1 to 100 parts per million), with naturally occurring plant products possessing activities complementary to BDT, in an isotonic diluent buffered with a physiologically acceptable buffer to a physiologically natural range.

A phacoemulsification handpiece for ophthalmic surgical procedures includes a needle having a tip and connected to a source of ultrasonic energy, for cutting and/or fragmenting eye tissue along with a conduit for introducing irrigation fluid proximate the needle tip. The handpiece also includes separate structure for introducing a viscous fluid, such as a viscoelastic material, proximate the needle tip as well as bore through the needle and handpiece for aspirating irrigation fluid, viscoelastic material end cut and/or fragmented eye tissue. An accumulator, connected to the housing is provided for containing a supply of viscous fluid. A diaphragm assembly and a manual valve are provided for delivering viscous material to the needle tip.

Compositions and methods useful for protecting human or animal eye cell layers and tissues exposed to trauma, e.g., during surgery, are disclosed. In one embodiment, the method comprises administering a protective amount of an ophthalmically acceptable aqueous composition containing a first alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal hyaluronate fraction having a molecular weight of at least about 2 million, for example, in the range of about 2 million to about 4 million, and a second alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal hyaluronate fraction having a molecular weight of about 200,000 to about 800,000, for example, in the range of about 300,000 to 700,000, to eye cell layers and tissues prior to the exposure to the trauma.

An improved intraocular lens ('IOL') is provided that has antimicrobial properties. The invention involves use of one or more antimicrobial polymers in fabricating at least a portion of the IOL. A preferred form of the invention involves use of antimicrobial iontophoretic materials.

An automated, syringe filling apparatus is disclosed for the on-site filling of syringes with a viscoelastic fluid material from a supply reservoir. A housing has a port for receiving the outlet end region of the viscoelastic supply reservoir and a retainer is provided for releasably retaining a conventional syringe to be filled from the viscoelastic supply reservoir. A flexible plastic tube, preferably formed as part of the viscoelastic supply reservoir, is used to interconnect the supply reservoir with a filling end of a syringe retained in the syringe retainer. A peristaltic pump mounted in the housing has a rotating head with a plurality of rollers which force the viscoelastic material through the tube from the supply reservoir into a retained syringe when the tube is locked between the pump head and a back-up member. Electric pump controls include a timer calibrated for causing the automatic filling of the syringe with predetermined amounts of viscoelastic material from the supply reservoir. The controls include a sensor that automatically shuts off the pump when a syringe being filled is filled to a preestablished maximum level. An air pump is provided for pressurizing the viscoelastic supply reservoir to aid in the viscoelastic pumping operation and insure against air voids being formed in a syringe being filled. Polymeric materials which are optically clear and resistant to discoloration are disclosed. In one embodiment, such compositions comprise optically clear, cross-linked polymers derived from a mixture comprising (A) a vinyl-containing polyorganosiloxane component, and (B) an organosilicon component including silicon-bonded hydride groups which react with vinyl groups included in (A) during the polymerization and (C) an effective platinum group metal-containing catalyst component, provided that the mole ratio of vinyl groups to silicon-bonded hydride groups in the mixture is greater than 1.2, preferably greater than about 4 or about 5, and is such that the polymers has a reduced discoloration susceptibility relative to a substantially identical polymer having a mole ratio of vinyl groups to silicon-bonded hydride groups in the precursor mixture equal to 1.2.

New compositions useful as the optics of intraocular lenses, in particular injectable intraocular lenses, are disclosed. In one embodiment, such compositions comprise polymer mixtures derived from the polymerization, for example, cross-linking, of curable components in precursor mixtures. These precursor mixtures comprise curable component comprising: (A) an unsaturation functional (vinyl group-containing) polyorganosiloxane component, (B) an organosilicon component including silicon-bonded hydride groups which react with the unsaturation functional groups included in (A) during the polymerization, and (C) an effective amount of a platinum group metal-containing catalyst component; and a polymer component which is substantially non-functional. The viscosity of the polymer component is greater than the viscosity of the curable component.

New high refractive index polymeric compositions and foldable intraocular lenses made from such compositions are disclosed. In one embodiment, the present compositions comprise a copolymer including a major amount of a first constituent derived from a first monomeric component the homopolymers of which have a refractive index of at least about 1.50, a minor amount of a second constituent derived from a second monomeric component other than the first monomeric component the homopolymers of which have a glass transition temperature of less than about 30.degree. C., preferably less than about 22.degree. C., and a third constituent derived from a crosslinking monomeric component in an amount effective to facilitate returning a deformed intraocular lens made of the composition to its original shape.

In one embodiment, the present invention involves a method for producing a fixation member assembly which comprises exposing a fixation member component to a first plasma at conditions effective to enhance, relative to a substantially identical fixation member component which is not subjected to the exposing step, the bondability between the fixation member component and a polymeric coating to be located on the fixation member component; and exposing the fixation member to a second plasma in the presence of at least one material selected from polymeric components, polymerizable components and mixtures thereof at conditions effective to form the polymeric coating located on the fixation member component.
