A continuous process for the production of dichlorohydrin by the reaction of allyl chloride, water and chlorine having substantially lower energy requirements than conventional processes, wherein the reaction mixture is subjected to reverse osmosis to concentrate the dichlorohydrin and to provide a permeate stream substantially free of dichlorohydrin, which permeate stream is recycled to the reaction.

Process for the production of dichlorohydrin and the electrodialysis

A continuous process for the production of dichlorohydrin by the reaction of allyl chloride, water and chlorine in a reaction zone comprising a first reaction stage, a final reaction stage and optionally at least one intermediate reaction stage, where the reaction mixture from at least one reaction stage is electrodialyzed in at least one electrodialysis zone to remove ions formed during the reaction, whereas at least a portion of the reaction product from said final reaction stage is passed to the concentrate inlet of said at least one electrodialysis zone, and withdrawing an ion-containing reaction product concentrate stream from said electrodialysis zone, whereby any dichlorohydrin which passes into the concentrate stream in said at least one electrodialysis zone may be recovered.

A continuous process for the production of dichlorohydrin by the reaction of chlorine, water and allyl chloride, having reduced water consumption wherein the dichlorohydrin formed is extracted into an inert organic solvent and the remaining aqueous reaction product is electrodialyzed, and at least a portion of the resulting diluate is recycled to the reaction.

In a multistage reaction system for the preparation of dichlorohydrin by the reaction of allyl chloride, water and chlorine and where the hydrochloric acid by-product is removed by electrodialysis, increased efficiency for acid removal by electrodialysis results from at least partial neutralization of the acid in the electrodialysis concentrate receiving stream, enabling the use of smaller electrodialysis membrane area and or lower energy consumption.

A continuous process for the production of dichlorohydrin by the reaction of allyl chloride, water and chlorine in a reaction zone comprising a plurality of reaction stages, wherein the aqueous reaction product from each stage, except the final stage is electrodialyzed and the diluate is passed to a subsequent reaction stage.
