In the instant invention, drawn yarns, with the following properties, are obtained: tenacity of at least 8.5 gpd; initial modulus of at least 150 gpd/100%; and shrinkage of less than 6%. Alternatively, the yarn may be characterized as: tenacity of greater than 10 gpd; initial modulus of greater than 120 gpd/100%; and shrinkage of less than 6%. These yarns are made by a process directed mainly toward affecting the yarn properties as they are spun.

An improved polyester fiber, polymer composition for producing such fibers by spinning and drawing, and a process for improving the production of fibers from polyester is disclosed wherein an aliphatic diester such as ethylene glycol distearate is incorporated into the polyester resin prior to spinning fibers from the resin in trace amounts of from about 0.01 to about 0.4 percent by weight of the polyester. An improved polyester/polyamide composite fiber is provided. The composite fiber includes a polyamide component generally considered to lack compatibility with a polyester component. Advantageously, the composite fiber includes an adhesion-promoting polymer in an amount effective to provide adhesion of the polyamide component to the polyester component. The composite fiber beneficially provides strength and cost advantages.
