An over-print varnish formulation is described. The formulation comprises a non-ionic polyurethane dispersion; a water-soluble polymer of Mless than 55,000; a wax having a particle size (d) 200 nm or less; and a water-soluble solvent, and at least 20 wt % solids, based on the total weight of the formulation. A method of printing using the formulation, and a printed article are also described.

Over-print varnish formulation

An example of a liquid ink includes a pigment dispersion, a polyurethane dispersion, a polytetrafluoroethylene wax emulsion, a co-solvent, and a balance of water. A particle diameter of a polytetrafluoroethylene wax in the polytetrafluoroethylene wax emulsion is less than 50 nm. Examples of the liquid ink may be incorporated into a thermal inkjet printing system.

Herein is described a piezo-jettable varnish composition comprising a latex polymer having a weight averaged molecular weight Mw of greater than about 50 000, a polymeric salt derived from an acidic polymer having a weight averaged molecular weight Mw in the range of about 1000 to about 50 000, water, and a co-solvent, wherein, the latex polymer and polymeric salt are present in amounts such that the ratio of latex polymer to polymeric salt by weight is in the range of greater than about 1:1 to about 8:1.

Piezo-jettable varnish composition

Herein is described a method of applying foil from a foil web to a substrate. The method may comprise: ink-jet printing a UV-curable adhesive onto the substrate in a predetermined image area; subjecting the adhesive to a first curing by exposing the adhesive to UV light in a dosage range of 140-170 mJ/cm; passing the substrate and a foil web through a nip where the foil web is pressed against the adhesive; subjecting the adhesive disposed between the substrate and the foil web to a second curing by exposing the adhesive to UV light in a dosage of at least 250 mJ/cm; and separating excess foil from the substrate, to leave foil on the predetermined image area. Substrates and UV-curable adhesives are also described.

Foil printing

A photo-curable ink composition including an acrylic polymer or copolymer, a vinyl ester component, a multifunctional monomer, a photoinitiator and a pigment. Also disclosed herein is a method for forming a printed article and an ink-jet ink printing system using said photo-curable ink composition.

Photo-curable ink composition

A mill base composition includes a compound comprising a divinyl ester of a dicarboxylic acid, a dispersing agent, and a pigment. The divinyl ester of the carboxylic acid includes from 2 to about 8 carbon atoms. The mill base composition is subjected to milling with milling beads to produce a milled mill base composition that functions as a pigment concentrate that may be added to an ink vehicle to form an ink composition suitable for use in inkjet ink devices. The milled mill base composition is particularly suited for UV curable ink compositions. A UV curable ink composition includes the pigment concentrate, one or more UV curable monomers, and one or more UV initiators.

Mill base composition and UV curable ink composition comprising same

A photo-curable ink composition including an acrylic polymer or copolymer, a mono-functional monomer, a multi-functional monomer, a photo-initiator and a pigment. Also disclosed herein is a method for forming a printed article and an inkjet printing system using said photo-curable ink composition.

A photo-curable ink composition including colorant, water, photo-initiator, UV curable polyurethane dispersions, hydrophobic radiation-curable monomers and water-soluble or water-miscible radiation curable monomers. Also disclosed herein is a method for forming a printed article and an inkjet printing system using said photo-curable ink composition.

An inkjet printing method includes providing an inkjet composition, which includes a radiation curable monomer or oligomer, a photo-initiator, and an inhibitor present in an amount sufficient to prevent full curing of the radiation curable monomer or oligomer during an initial exposure to a curing energy. First drops of the inkjet composition are deposited onto a substrate. The curing energy is selected such that it is sufficient to substantially consume the inhibitor. The first drops are exposed to the curing energy, whereby the first drops retain substantially a same surface tension as a liquid drop of the inkjet composition. Second drops of the inkjet composition are deposited adjacent to the first drops. The first and second drops are exposed to the curing energy, whereby the first drops are at least partially cured and the second drops retain substantially the same surface tension as a liquid drop of the inkjet composition.

Inkjet printing method

A photo-curable ink composition obtained upon mixing a first printing liquid with a second printing liquid. The first printing liquid includes, at least, UV curable polyurethane dispersions and colorant; the second printing liquid includes, at least, hydrophobic radiation-curable monomers, water-soluble or water-miscible radiation curable monomers and photo-initiators. Also disclosed herein is a set of printing liquids including said first and second printing liquid; an inkjet printing system and a method for forming a printed article.

The present disclosure relates to a method of printing a radiation-curable ink composition on a substrate. A radiation-curable ink composition is deposited onto a substrate. The radiation-curable ink composition comprises a photoinitiator in an amount of not more than about 4.5 weight %. The deposited ink composition is irradiated with UV radiation. The irradiated ink composition is heated to a temperature of at least about 75 degrees C. The UV radiation is from an LED source or is centered at a wavelength selected from the group consisting of 375 nm, about 385 nm and about 395 nm.

Printing methods

A photo-curable ink composition including UV curable polyurethane dispersions, water, photo-initiator, colorant and hydrophobic radiation-curable monomers. Also disclosed herein is a method for forming a printed article and an inkjet printing system using said photo-curable ink composition.

An aqueous ink composition includes at least 60% water by weight, an acrylic latex polymer suspension, a polyurethane suspension, a polyethylene wax suspension, and an organic solvent that comprises about 10% to about 30% of the ink composition. In methods for preparing an aqueous ink composition, a combination of the aforementioned components is provided. The combination is subjected to conditions under which the ink composition becomes substantially uniform and then the combination is subjected to filtration.

Aqueous ink compositions and method of preparing same

A method of increasing the optical density of a printed image includes treating a first layer of deposited ink with a corona discharge. An apparatus for increasing the optical density of a printed image includes a print head for depositing a first layer of ink; and at least one electrode in proximity to the print head for treating the first layer of ink with a corona discharge.
