Methods and apparatus for distinguishing between an antenna of a user equipment (UE) being blocked by a cover (e.g., a protective rubber or plastic case) or by human tissue (e.g., a finger or palm). The transmission power of uplink (UL) signals may be adjusted accordingly, with relatively higher transmission power for open space or a cover and relatively lower transmission power for human tissue. One example method for wireless communications by a UE generally includes transmitting a first signal from the UE, receiving a plurality of signals at the UE based on the transmitted first signal, determining values for at least two different types of parameters based on the received plurality of signals, determining an environmental scenario for the UE based on the values for the at least two different types of parameters, and transmitting a second signal using a transmission power based on the determined environmental scenario.

Methods and apparatus for user equipment to differentiate human grip from protective covers

A method for wireless communication performed by a head-mounted user equipment (UE), the method includes determining a first spatial relationship between an eye of a human user of the head-mounted UE and physical transmission and reception ports of the head-mounted UE; based on the first spatial relationship, determining a second spatial relationship between a plurality of radio frequency (RF) beam directions of the head-mounted UE and the eye of the human user; selecting a first RF beam direction from among the plurality of RF beam directions based at least in part on the second spatial relationship with respect to the first RF beam direction; and transmitting or receiving RF radiation using a first RF beam conforming to the first RF beam direction.

Wireless communication techniques employing beamforming based on spatial relationship to human tissue

Aspects relate to a calibration of an antenna array module of a wireless communication device in open space. The antenna array module may be used as a proximity sensor to detect an object's proximity relative to the antenna array module. Aspects include displaying an open space calibration instruction on a display of the wireless communication device, transmitting a proximity test signal from the antenna array module, measuring a value of a first signal received at the antenna array module in response to transmitting the proximity test signal, and storing the value of the first signal as an open space calibration value of the antenna array module. The first signal may be measured at cross-polarized antennas of the antenna array module. The value of the first signal may be representative of perturbations of the proximity test signal at the cross-polarized antennas.

Calibration of open space for an antenna array module

An apparatus is disclosed for multiplexing radar beat signals. In an example aspect, the apparatus includes an antenna array and a wireless transceiver jointly configured to transmit a radar transmit signal and receive two or more radar receive signals. The two or more radar receive signals represent portions of the radar transmit signal that are reflected by an object. The wireless transceiver comprises a radio-frequency integrated circuit with two or more receive chains and a multiplexing circuit. Each one of the two or more receive chains is configured to generate a radar beat signal by downconverting a respective radar receive signal of the two or more radar receive signals using the radar transmit signal. The multiplexing circuit is coupled to the two or more receive chains and is configured to multiplex the two or more radar beat signals together to generate a composite radar beat signal.

Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques for radar management based on interference detected over an air interface. A method that may be performed by a base station (BS) or a user equipment (UE) includes measuring received power at each of a plurality of receive-beams. The method may also include determining whether the measured power received at one or more of the plurality of receive-beams satisfies a threshold condition. If the measured power received at the one or more of the plurality of receive-beams satisfies the threshold condition, the method may also include selecting a directional transmit beam based on a direction of one of the one or more of the plurality of receive-beams that satisfy the threshold condition, and transmitting a radar waveform over the directional transmit beam.

Radar management based on interference detected over an air interface

In an aspect, a user equipment (UE) determines a mutual coupling signal associated with a transmit antenna and a receive antenna, determines a mutual coupling difference between the mutual coupling signal and a reference signal, determines a beat signal difference between a current beat signal and a previous beat signal, and determines an amount of micro-motion that is present within a near field. The UE determines whether human tissue is present within the near field based on the mutual coupling difference and the amount of micro-motion. Based on determining that the human tissue is present within the near field, the UE determines an amount of radio frequency exposure associated with the human tissue. Based on determining that the amount of radio frequency exposure exceeds a maximum permissible exposure, the UE reduces the amount of radio frequency exposure associated with the human tissue.

One example method for wireless communications by a UE generally includes receiving a plurality of cross-polarization captures from multiple antenna arrays of the UE; detecting that the cross-polarization captures correspond to a first OS circle in an in-phase/quadrature (IQ) plane out of a set of possible OS circles for the UE; based on the detection, assigning the first OS circle as an active OS circle for the UE and deactivating other possible OS circles in the set; determining an environmental scenario corresponding to the active OS circle; and transmitting a signal using a transmission power based on the determined scenario.
