Apparatus for puncturing a fossa ovalis includes a catheter shaped so as to define a central catheter lumen open through a catheter distal end opening. An angle between (i) a first line running between first and second lateral openings defined by the catheter and (ii) a second line that is parallel to a central longitudinal axis of the catheter when the catheter is straight, is between 30 and 150 degrees. A flexible longitudinal member passes (a) from a proximal portion of the catheter to a distal portion of the catheter, (b) out of the first lateral opening, and (c) into the second lateral opening, so as to form a loop outside the catheter. The flexible longitudinal member is configured to assume a deployment configuration in which a distal-most portion of the loop is curved and is distal to the catheter distal end opening. Other embodiments are also described.

Fossa ovalis penetration catheter

The devices and methods described herein include a body lumen fluid flow modulator including an upstream flow accelerator and a downstream flow decelerator. The fluid flow modulator preferably includes one or more openings that define a gap/entrainment region that provides a pathway through which additional fluid from a branch lumen(s) is entrained into the fluid stream flowing from the upstream flow accelerator to the downstream flow decelerator.

Flow modification devices in body lumens

The devices and methods described herein include an implantable body lumen fluid flow modulator including an upstream flow accelerator separated by a gap from a downstream flow decelerator. The gap is a pathway to entrain additional fluid from a branch lumen(s) into the fluid stream flowing from the upstream flow accelerator to the downstream flow decelerator.

Flow modification in body lumens

An apparatus for delivery of a device into a hollow organ and a method of delivery are provided. The apparatus includes an elongated tube having proximal and distal openings and being configured for carrying the device on a distal portion thereof. The apparatus further includes a tubular cover for covering at least a portion of the device when mounted on the elongated tube, the tubular cover being radially elastic and axially non-elastic. The tubular cover is retrievable into the elongated tube through the distal opening, such that when the device is mounted on the elongated tube and covered by the tubular cover, retrieval of the tubular cover into the elongated tube uncovers the device for delivery into the hollow organ.

The acute and chronic devices and methods described herein include a body lumen fluid flow modulator including an upstream flow accelerator and a downstream flow decelerator. The fluid flow modulator preferably includes one or more openings that define a gap/entrainment region that provides a pathway through which additional fluid from a branch lumen(s) is entrained into the fluid stream flowing from the upstream flow accelerator to the downstream flow decelerator. Delivery devices including a sheath and inner assembly also are provided for delivering the flow modulator to the body lumen. The delivery device may maintain the flow modulator in its collapsed, delivery state upon retraction of the sheath for ease of readjustment within the body lumen prior to full deployment of the flow modulator within the body lumen.

A distal portion of the catheter is shaped to define first and second lateral openings. An angle between (a) a first line running between the first and second lateral openings, and (b) a second line that is parallel to a central longitudinal axis of the catheter when the catheter is straight, is between 30 and 150 degrees. A flexible longitudinal member passes from a proximal portion of the catheter to the distal portion via the first channel, out of the first channel via the first lateral opening, into the second channel via the second lateral opening, and from the distal portion to the proximal portion via the second channel.

A method is provided for puncturing a fossa ovalis of a heart, the method including inserting a catheter into a right atrium of the heart, and advancing a distal portion of the catheter toward an interatrial septum of the heart. A flexible longitudinal member is slid through openings disposed at the distal portion of the catheter, such that the flexible longitudinal member is made to loop around a portion of an inside perimeter of the fossa ovalis. A method is provided, including transvascularly inserting a guidewire into a right atrium of a subject. Apparatus is provided that includes (a) a catheter, and (b) a hollow needle disposed within a lumen of the catheter, the hollow needle including a proximal portion and a distal portion that is more flexible than the proximal portion. The apparatus is passed into the right atrium by passing the needle over the guidewire. Following the passing of the apparatus into the right atrium, the guidewire is partially withdrawn into the needle, while keeping a distal end of the guidewire within the needle and in a body of the subject. Thereafter, a hole is formed through an interatrial septum of the subject with the needle. Other embodiments are also described.

The system includes a sleeve configured for spanning the anastomosis site at an internal surface of the hollow organ and a band configured for attachment to an external surface of the hollow organ and limiting migration of the sleeve beyond the anastomosis site.

Apparatus and methods are described, including apparatus for puncturing a fossa ovalis of a heart. The apparatus includes a catheter shaped to define a catheter lumen. A puncturing element is slidably disposed within the catheter lumen, and is deployed from a distal portion of the catheter and to puncture the fossa ovalis. A probing element is deployed from the distal portion of the catheter. Upon being deployed, the probing element probes tissue near the fossa ovalis, the probing element having a first configuration thereof upon probing the tissue near the fossa ovalis. Upon probing tissue of the fossa ovalis, the probing element facilitates positioning of the puncturing element, by automatically adopting a second configuration thereof that is different from the first configuration. Other applications are also described.
