A water system is provided for an extracoporeal lithotripter. The reflector is aimed downwardly and has a spark gap at the first focus point thereof for generating a shock wave. A rubber diaphragm spans the lower end of the reflector. A water reservoir is provided along with pipes and a pump for circulating water from the reservoir to the reflector and back. A vacuum pump maintains pressure below ambient in the reservoir, the reflector and connecting pipes to control downward ballooning of the diaphragm.

Water system for lithotripter

An extracorporeal lithotripter has an ultrasound transducer mounted within the lithotripter reflector. The reflector and transducer are oriented downwardly, and a housing surrounds the transducer to protect the transducer from shockwaves generated within the reflector at the first focus point thereof. The housing opens downwardly, and a sleeve encircles the lower portion of the housing and extends below the housing. A conduit is connected to the sleeve to provide pressure less than atmospheric in said sleeve to effect filling of said sleeve with water for operation of the ultrasound transducer. The conduit alternatively and selectively effects filling of the sleeve with gas to protect against reflected shockwaves from below that might otherwise damage the transducer.

Reflected shockwave shielding device

A lithotripter reflector is disclosed which has an ultrasound transducer mounted at the open end of the reflector and on the axis of rotation. The transducer is supported in a brass socket, and a pair of oppositely directed arms are aligned with one another and extend in opposite directions from the housing. The outer ends of the arms are provided with steel blocks which are ground to precision size. The blocks are received in carefully milled sockets in said reflector so that insertion of the blocks in the sockets accurately positions the housing and hence the transducer.

A nebulizer has a body with oxygen inlet and outlet ends through which oxygen flows. An aspirator is provided within the body in communication with a water supply conduit for aspirating water into oxygen flowing through the body. A float valve interconnects the water inlet and the aspirator for controlling the flow of water into the oxygen flowing through the nebulizer.

A medication inhaler is provided having a cylindrical body usable with different inlet and outlet fittings at the opposite ends thereof. An inlet end fitting is provided with inner and outer cylindrical flanges gripping the upstream end of the cylindrical body and adapted to receive structure for misting medication into said cylindrical body. The downstream or outlet end fitting snaps over the downstream end of the cylindrical body and is provided with an axially extending protrusion impinging against and securing a flexible diaphragm to an inwardly directed flange at the exit end of the cylindrical body. The outlet end fitting may take different forms such as a mouthpiece to fit into a patient's mouth, a mask to fit over a patient's mouth and nose, or a connection for flexible tubing leading to an endotracheal tube.

An electrode construction is provided for electrohydraulic shock wave generation such as for extracorporeal kidney stone destruction. The construction includes a reflector adapted to be filled with liquid such as water for coupling to a human body. The reflector has a focus point. An insulated base supports a plurality of pairs of electrodes, and is movable relative to the reflector. The insulating base is moved to bring successive pairs of electrodes into substantial coincidence with the focus point of the reflector. Upon such movement electrical connection is automatically made to extensions of the pair of electrodes having their spark gap substantially coincident with said focus point.

A pediatric medication inhaler is provided for cooperation with a medication dispersing cylinder and a supply of medication. The inhaler is a one piece device in the nature of a mask molded of integral plastic or elastomer. The invention is characterized in having a bubble or relatively thin wall projecting from the mask-like device, which bubbler flexes inwardly upon inhalation so that a person providing medication to the infant can watch for inhalation.
