A system and method of using the same, wherein the system comprises: an optical surface having a diffractive image generating structure disposed thereon, the diffractive image generating structure itself comprising a layer of reflective material incorporating a plurality of grooved diffractive elements each having a periodic wave surface profile, the periodic wave surface profiles each having a groove alignment direction; a source of incident electromagnetic radiation arranged to illuminate the diffractive elements at an angle of incidence substantially normal to the plane of the surface of the diffractive elements; means for polarizing the radiation from the source, and means for polarizing radiation reflected from the diffractive elements; wherein the diffractive elements are configured such that, in use, polarization conversion of the incident radiation takes place, and wherein the diffractive elements are disposed in a two dimensional array of pixels to represent an image; and further wherein the means for polarizing is arranged to pass incident radiation having a polarization state of approximately 45&#xb0; azimuth to the groove alignment direction, and is arranged to select a polarization, using the means for polarizing the radiation reflected from the diffractive elements, and to pass radiation of the selected polarization to a detection point.

Optical transmitters and receivers for quantum key distribution

The present invention relates to an improved quantum signal transmitter, which has a plurality of quantum output channels having at least one optical source and at least one optical splitter acting on the output of said at least one source. Such a transmitter can easily be used with existing passive optical network (PON) systems and can be a compact piece of equipment.

Multiplexed quantum key distribution

A non-linear optical device includes a frequency-conversion waveguide and first and second input waveguides. The longitudinal axes of the input waveguides are inclined to that of the frequency-conversion waveguide such a first transverse mode is excited in the latter at the input frequency in operation of the device. The frequency-conversion waveguide supports a second transverse mode at an output frequency of the device, such that the phase velocity of the second transverse mode at the output frequency is substantially equal to that of the first transverse mode at the input frequency, thus providing phase-matching by balancing the effects of chromatic and modal dispersion.

Non-linear optical device

An electro-optic waveguide polarization modulator () comprising a waveguide core () having first and second faces defining a waveguide core plane, a plurality of primary electrodes () arranged at a first side of the waveguide core plane and out of said plane, and at least one secondary electrode () arranged at a second side of the waveguide core plane and out of said plane, wherein the electrodes () are adapted in use to provide an electric field having field components () in two substantially perpendicular directions within the waveguide core () so as modulate the refractive index thereof such that electromagnetic radiation propagating through the core () is converted from a first polarization state to a second polarization state.
