To provide light distribution required by legal and safety requirements for utomotive head lamps from a discharge lamp, a discharge vessel or bulb (2, 12) is retained within an outer bulb (7, 17), which outer bulb is made of hard glass and is coated at the outside with a visible light radiation absorbing coating (8, 18) directly applied to the outer bulb, and placed thereon to provide the desired light distribution. Thus, standard silicon iron oxide black can be used for the coating. Preferably, the inside of the outer bulb has a coating of infrared absorbing, visible light transmitting material applied thereto.

To improve the high-voltage flash-over resistance by increasing the lead aration of the lamps, the pinch or press seal is, while the lamp is being made and the lamp tubing is in plastically deformable condition, extended at least is the region adjacent the end of the later formed pinch seal by introducing spreader jaws, either parallel or, at least eventually, in acutely angled relation to each other into the softened end portion, and then spreading apart the jaws so that, at the outer end portions of the jaws, the plastically deformable region will assume an oval shape whose longer dimension is wider than the outer diameter of the tubing in the region which will later from the discharge vessel.

Method of making a single-ended metal halide high-pressure discharge

To eliminate external high-voltage, for example 25 kV insulated-electrical ables connected to a high-pressure discharge lamp in the reflector--light source--supply circuit combination unit, a plastic housing is fitted against the back surface of the reflector, thus taking up space which is usually available and not otherwise utilized within an automotive vehicle, the housing retaining electrical supply and starting circuitry, including a high-voltage source; the lamp (4, 13) is directly connected to the housing which is sealed by a flexible seal to the reflector, to thereby exclude environmental contamination of the interior of the reflector.

The filaments for high beam and low beam are in respectively parallel planes, and the axis of the low beam filament forms an angle .alpha. which is less than 90.degree. with the lamp axis, or seal beam headlamp axis, respectively, the angle being suitably between about 30.degree. and 60.degree., and preferably about 45.degree., upon projection of the lamp axis, in parallel, in the plane which includes the axis of the filament. The inclination of the low beam filament facilitates adjustment of the headlamp to provide, reliably, glare-free road illumination in accordance with SAE standards.

Dual filament halogen cycle incandescent lamp for the use in motor

A halogen cycle incandescent lamp with a bulb of soft glass, the inner suce of the bulb being depleted of alkali ions to avoid a reaction between the halogen constituents of the filling gas and the alkali constituents of the bulb glass. The vacancies thus generated in the glass lattice may be filled by replacement ions such as Li, Mg, Ca and/or the bulb may be coated with a protective layer of a metal and/or semi-metal oxide such as SiO.sub.2, TiO.sub.2, B.sub.2 O.sub.3. The sodium ions are removed from the bulb glass by preferably hydrogen chloride or hydrogen bromide gas which acts on the bulb at a temperature between 500.degree. C. and the softening point of the glass. The vacancies are filled by bringing the inner surface of the bulb in contact with molten salts or solutions of salts of Li, Mg or Ca. The protective layer is applied by introducing a metal halide and/or semi-metal halide e.g., TiCl.sub.4 or SiCl.sub.4 into the bulb which forms metal oxide and/or semi-metal oxide e.g., TiO.sub.2 or SiO.sub.2 by reaction with hydrogen and oxygen which frees the halide. The protective layer may also be applied by vapor deposition of the respective oxide or by dip process.

Halogen cycle incandescent lamp and method for the protection of its

An incandescent lamp having a hard glass envelope, a tungsten filament, and an inert gas fill containing a halogen or halide additive. The hard glass envelope contains substantially no alkali or carbon monoxide and is preferably devoid of these materials. The hard glass contains less than 0.03% by weight of water and less than 0.1 .mu. liter/g carbon dioxide dissolved therein.
