Automatic power control (APC) is provided by a) a variable output voltage differential receiver/driver, which receiver is responsive to data signals for generating a voltage, the laser driver output voltage amplitude being controlled by a first potentiometer on an integrated circuit generating an AC current signal for summing with a DC current signal to provide a laser drive current signal to b) a laser transmitter having a laser diode, said laser diode for producing optical power over an optical transfer medium and a photodiode for producing a feedback signal in response to said optical power, the APC including c) a power stabilizing circuit including an error amplifier, a second potentiometer and a bias current drive transistor, the error amplifier having inputs for both the feedback signal and a voltage reference to generate an output control signal, the second potentiometer affecting said output control signal, and said bias current drive transistor being responsive to said output control signal for supplying bias current to the laser diode. According to another aspect of the invention, one or more of the potentiometers, error amplifier or voltage reference are included on said integrated circuit.

Automatic power control and laser slope efficiency normalizing circuit

An optoelectronic transceiver module comprising a housing having a first opening at a first end and a second opening at a second end; a printed circuit board mounted within the housing; an electrical connector on the printed circuit board at the first end of the optoelectronic transceiver module, the electrical connector having an insulative mating surface within the first opening and including a first side with electrical contacts in an area oriented substantially parallel to the first side of the insulative mating surface, wherein the electrical contacts slidingly engage a circuit card connector of a host receptacle in order to quickly install and remove the optoelectronic transceiver module from within the circuit card connector; an optical assembly connected to the printed circuit board at the second end of the optoelectronic transceiver module, the optical assembly including a transmitting optical subassembly and a receiving optical subassembly, the second opening allowing the optical assembly to communicate outside of the housing in order for the optical assembly to be coupled with a duplex fiber optic plug providing for bi-directional data transmission over an optical data link; and a voltage converter circuit within the housing having a predetermined internal output voltage consistent with an internal operating voltage of the transceiver module, wherein an external supply voltage varying within a predetermined range received by the voltage converter is converted to the predetermined internal operating voltage of the transceiver module, thereby enabling the transceiver module to operate properly at various external supply voltages.

Transceiver module having variable voltage capability

An optoelectronic transceiver module having a housing with a first opening at a first end and a second opening at a second end, a printed circuit board mounted within the housing, an electrical connector on the printed circuit board at the first end of the optoelectronic transceiver module, the electrical connector having an insulative mating surface within the first opening and including a first side with electrical contacts in an area oriented substantially parallel to the first side of the insulative mating surface, wherein the electrical contacts slidingly engage a circuit card connector of a host receptacle in order to quickly install and remove the optoelectronic transceiver module from within the circuit card connector, an optical assembly on the printed circuit board at the second end of the optoelectronic transceiver module, the optical assembly including a transmitting optical subassembly and a receiving optical subassembly, the second opening allowing the optical assembly to communicate outside of the housing in order for the optical assembly to be coupled with a duplex fiber optic plug providing for bi-directional data transmission over an optical data link, a data storage module within the housing having a configurable address corresponding to the address of the optoelectronic transceiver module and address contacts electrically connected to at least some of the electrical contacts of the electrical connector, thereby enabling a host receptacle to communicate with the address contacts of the data storage module via the electrical contacts of the electrical connector in order to determine an address of the optoelectronic transceiver module.

Addressable transceiver module

An optoelectronic transmitter is provided including a semiconductor laser as the active optical transmitting element. The transmitter includes first and second printed circuit boards, with the first printed circuit board having mounted thereon electronic components and circuitry for driving the optoelectronic transmitter. A transmitting optical sub-assembly (TOSA) is mounted to the second printed circuit board. The second printed circuit board has an array of solder pads disposed on the back surface thereof, and the first printed circuit board has a corresponding array of solder pads disposed along an outer edge of the board. Spacing of the solder pads is such that when the first printed circuit board is placed in perpendicular abutment against the outer edge of the first printed circuit board, the solder pads formed on the first printed circuit board are aligned adjacent to the solder pads disposed on the back of the second printed circuit board. Solder joints are then formed in the angular space between the solder pads disposed on the first and second printed circuit boards, bonding the boards together while simultaneously providing electrical connections between the various components mounted on the individual printed circuit boards. An improved control circuit for driving the semiconductor laser transmitter facilitates this arrangement. The improved control circuit provides both automatic power control and laser slope compensation in order to normalize the output characteristics of individual transceivers. An alternate embodiment further includes a laser fault latching circuit for disabling the laser transmitter, and providing laser fault indication.

Optoelectronic transmitter with improved control circuit and laser fault

An optoelectronic transmitter is provided including a laser diode. A control circuit for driving the laser diode includes a current source which provides a DC bias current to the laser diode, and the laser diode emits an optical signal having an average power determined by the magnitude of the bias current. A voltage regulator establishes a regulated supply voltage which is input to a first reference circuit and a feedback monitor circuit. The first reference circuit establishes a first fixed reference voltage. The feedback monitor circuit includes a monitor device for measuring the optical power emitted by the laser diode, and the monitor circuit establishes a variable monitor voltage proportional to the optical power measured by the monitor device. An op-amp compares the first fixed reference voltage and the feedback monitor voltage, and the output voltage of the op-amp controls the magnitude of the bias current output by the current source. A disable switch is incorporated for selectively blocking the bias current to the laser upon receipt of a DISABLE signal. A second reference circuit is provided for developing a second derived reference voltage, and an analog switch which is also actuated by the DISABLE signal connects the second derived reference voltage to the feedback monitor circuit while the DISABLE signal is active. Otherwise, the analog switch connects the regulated supply voltage to the feedback monitor circuit at all other times.
