An input/output (I/O) device is coupled to a processor via a first peripheral bus and a second peripheral bus. The I/O device is configured to expose a first physical function (PF) and a second PF to a virtual machine (VM) executing on the processor. A first virtual function (VF) associated with the first PF is assigned to the first peripheral bus, and a second VF associated with the second PF is assigned to the second peripheral bus. The first VF and the second VF are exposed as a single VF to the VM. The VM can perform transactions with the I/O device via the single VF using the first peripheral bus and the second peripheral bus.

Bonding multiple peripheral ports to a single virtual machine

Cloud services, such as a storage service, are able to communicate through a virtual PCI request over a non-PCI bus by using a modified device driver that communicates with a network interface. One or more cloud services can execute on a same board or within a same Integrated Circuit (IC) as the network interface. The network interface adapts communications from the one or more services by allowing the services to use a PCI protocol despite that the services are not communicating with the network interface over a PCI bus.

On-premises network interface adapted for cloud-based services

A network device can be used on a client side and a server side to accelerate request/response protocols for object transfers between the client side and the server side. The network device can interface with an application executing on the host device, which can allow the network device to expose different operations that can enable acceleration of different higher level object transfer commands. The network device can expose operations to pre-post anonymous receive buffers and client buffers even before the server side responds to the object transfer commands, which can allow the client buffers to be available to the server early on. Small transfers can be performed without remote direct memory access (RDMA) and can be received in the anonymous receive buffers at the server side. Bulk object data can be sent via RDMA for direct data placement into the client buffers to enable zero copy.

Accelerating request/response protocols

A resource request is received by a peripheral device from host processing logic. The resource request includes a requested resource size. The peripheral device allocates resource of the peripheral device in response to the resource request. A resource response is sent by the peripheral device to the host processing logic. The resource response includes a location of the allocated resource.

Dynamic resource management of network device

A packet header is received from a host and written to a header queue. A direct memory access (DMA) descriptor is received from the host and written to a packet descriptor queue. The DMA descriptor points to packet data in a host memory. The packet data is fetched from host memory and the packet header and the packet data are provided to a network interface.

Packet queueing for network device

A resource request is received by a network device from a virtual machine running on a host. The resource request includes a requested resource size. The network device allocates resources of the network device in response to the resource request. A resource response is sent by the network device to the virtual machine that generated the resource request. The resource response includes a location of the allocated resource.

A first write transaction is received by a device that includes a transaction identifier and a memory location identifier. The memory location identifies a register or a memory location of a device. A value from the register or memory location is read. A second write transaction is sent to a block of host memory. The second write transaction includes the value and the transaction identifier.

Reducing read transactions to peripheral devices

A computer-implemented method for efficient data storage is provided. A first storage medium associates data stored on one or more data storage media with a unique identification value (ID) for the purpose of determining de-duplication status of the data. In response to receiving a request to read the data from a logical address, the first storage medium retrieves the data from a second storage medium based on the unique ID. In response to receiving a request to write the data to a logical address, the one or more data storage media store at least one copy of the data based on the de-duplication status of the data.
