A continuous casting process and apparatus for feeding a molten metal into a mold from a metal supply system through a metal feeding duct, effecting a stepwise withdrawal of a continuous strand or casting from the mold for a measured length and simultaneously feeding a molten metal into the latter, producing a superpressure on the forming skin of casting at the side of molten metal at intervals between the casting withdrawal cycles. On completion of the withdrawal cycle, the molten metal is fed from the metal supply system to an auxiliary vessel prefilled with an inert gas, whereupon a preset pressure is built up in the molten metal inside the auxiliary vessel and in the casting being formed. Next, the molten metal is moved to and fro between the auxiliary vessel and the metal feeding duct of the metal supply system. As the casting is withdrawn from the mold for a given length, the molten metal is concurrently fed into the mold from the auxiliary vessel and from the metal supply system.

Continuous casting process and apparatus

The continuous metal casting method includes continuously forming a portion of an ingot in the open-ended mold of the primary cooling zone under pressure, with a cold junction being formed at the end of the portion. The portion of the ingot is intermittently drawn into the secondary cooling zone, to produce the ingot subdivided by the cold junctions into portions of a required length. In the intervals between the successive drawing cycles, the ingot is treated in the secondary cooling zone to effect constrained shrinkage, while producing in the cold junction areas a bending strain of a value not short of the yield strength of the metal. The plant includes a vessel for the metal to be cast, communicating with the open-ended mold of the primary cooling zone. Arranged successively in the path of the ingot in the secondary cooling zone, downstream of the primary cooling zone, are a mechanism for drawing the ingot from the open-ended mold, and a mechanism for dividing the ingot into portions of the required length. The open-ended mold incorporates a chill for additional withdrawal of heat from the end face area of the portion of the ingot which is being formed in the mold.

Continuous metal casting method and plant for performing same

An apparatus for withdrawing a metal casting from the mould of a continuous metal casting plant comprises a movable housing and cooled shoes disposed along the perimeter of the casting. Each shoe is provided with two pairs of wedges disposed between the shoe and the housing. One of the wedges of each pair is rigidly secured on the shoe. The other wedges of these pairs are connected with each other through a member adjustable in length and one of them also with a crossbar through a member of a constant length. The apparatus is also provided with a drive for pressing the shoes against the casting and a drive for withdrawing the casting from the mould, rods of hydraulic cylinders thereof being connected to the crossbar. The proposed invention makes it possible to improve the quality of a casting, increase the metal yield and to step up the rate of casting.

Continuous casting withdrawal apparatus

A method of continuous casting of an ingot by way of its recurrent upward drawing from a radial cooled mould into which molten metal is forced from a bottom of a supply vessel. Pressure is increased inside the ingot being formed in the period of a pause between its drawing from the mould for a tighter fitting of the ingot skin to the walls of the mould, and, once the ingot skin of a prescribed thickness is solidified, the pressure is reduced in the molten metal enclosed by the skin. Thereafter a hole is made in the upper butt portion of the ingot skin and a neutral gas is fed through the hole until the levels of the molten metal in the mould and in the supply vessel are equalized; then the ingot is drawn from the mould. The newly formed upcast branch of the ingot envelope is reduced with the aid of rolls in the course of drawing to a continuous section of a prescribed shape, the volume of a neutral gas (gas cushion) enclosed by the envelope being ahead of the reducing rolls. The method is good for the production of flat, profiled and multilayer ingots.

Method of continuous casting of ingots

A rolling mill comprising a mill stand which is mounted on a movable stage and in which are mounted grooved mill rolls whose necks are connected with hydraulic drives and gear wheels in mesh with each other. The movable mill stand is provided with at least two pairs of inductors mounted on a bottom-mill separator intermediate of housing braces. The inductors are disposed above and under the continuously cast ingot, referred to hereinafter as a continuous casting, being rolled, on both sides of the mill rolls. The inductors establish in said rolled continuous casting inductive currents which heat said casting, and electromagnetic forces, which create through the inductor bodies pulling-and-pushing forces which are applied to the movable mill stand.

Mill for rolling continuously cast ingot

A rolling mill comprises a movable mill stand mounted in slideways and accommodating a mill roll unit installed therein on supports, said mill roll unit including housings with grooved mill rolls disposed therein and roll necks which are coupled with hydraulic drives and gear wheels in mesh with each other. The movable mill stand is equipped with two linear cylindrical inductors establishing a travelling magnetic field. Said inductors are mounted on supports coincident with the axis of rolling of a round ingot, referred to hereinafter as a continuous round casting, and are rotatable about said axis of rolling through an angle of at least 90.degree., the mill roll unit being disposed intermediate of said inductors and being fixed rigidly to the end faces of the inductor bodies.

A rolling mill comprising a movable mill stand mounted in slideways and enclosing grooved mill rolls whose necks are coupled with a hydraulic drive and with gear wheels in mesh with each other. A drive for reciprocating said movable mill stand is equipped with at least two linear inductors installed immovably and at least two electrically conductive bars connected rigidly to movable mill stand separators and braces. The bars are adapted to move intermediate of said inductors and have a length exceeding that of said inductors and begin of a value of at the maximum transfer of said movable mill stand. By establishing inductive currents and, hence, electromagnetic forces in the bars, the inductors develop through said bars pulling or pushing forces acting on said movable mill sand sufficient to provide a requisite roll force. The mill roll hydraulic drive is an auxiliary one.

A mill using a movable stand with shaped rolls featuring a working portion, with the reversible rotation of the rolls being limited by an angle encompassing the working roll portion. The rolling of an ingot being cast is effected by carrying the stand with the rotating rolls 'forward' and 'backward'.

Mill for rolling continuous cast ingots

A method envisaging the use of a movable stand with shaped rolls featuring a working portion with the reversible rotation of said rolls being limited by an angle encompassing said working roll portion, and the rolling of an ingot being cast is effected by carrying the stand with the rotating rolls 'forward' -- 'backward'. With a stable rolling process the rolling cycle comprises the following steps: setting the rolls with their working portions to one of their extreme positions, carrying the stand with the standing rolls 'backward' in the direction opposite to that of the ingot being cast into a position corresponding to the next reduction of the ingot, reducing the ingot between the rolls with the stand carried 'backward,' setting the rolls with their working portions to another extreme position, displacing the stand with the stopped rolls 'backward' at a distance which is the function of the assigned shrinkage during the next 'forward' stroke of the stand, reducing of the ingot between the rolls with the stand moving 'forward,' carrying the stand with the stopped rolls 'backward' at a distance which is the function of the assigned shrinkage during the next 'backward' stroke of the stand. Next the 'backward' -- 'forward' strokes are repeated until an ingot portion extracted from the mould over the withdrawal period is rolled out, whereafter the movable stand with the stoppeding rolls is carried 'forward' at a distance equal to the ingot length extracted from the mould over the withdrawal period. Further, after the next extraction of the ingot being cast from the mould the rolling cycles are repeated for the next portions of the ingot being extracted from the mould. To provide the reciprocation of the stand and reversible rotary motion of the rolls the rolling mill is equipped with a gear made as hydraulic rams mounted on the movable stand and to ensure the displacement of the stand when the work rolls do not interact with the ingot being rolled the mill is furnished with the second transfer gear.
