A data storage unit comprises a housing, an information disc which is centrically rotatable about an axis of rotation, and an electrical drive unit for driving the information disc. A bearing supports the information disc and the rotor relative to the housing and a scanning unit is provided for cooperation with the information disc. The housing includes two plane-parallel main walls which are oriented transversely of the axis of rotation, which each have a contour at least substantially similar to that of the information disc, and which are interconnected by smaller side walls. The housing forms a cartridge accommodating the information disc, the electrical drive unit and the scanning unit. The information disc is disposed in a plane intersecting the electrical drive unit and the scanning unit is situated between the information disc and one of the main walls.

An information storage unit comprises a frame (1), a magnetic information disc (9, 10), particularly a magnetic hard disc, which is rotatable about an axis of rotation (910). A magnetic head (52-55) is arranged on a pivotable support (56-59), and a lifting device lifts the magnetic head from the information disc. The lifting device comprises an electromagnetic actuator (62-65) having a first actuator part which is stationary relative to the frame and a second actuator part arranged on a movable portion (56b-59b) of the support. When the actuator is energized these actuator parts cooperate with one another via an air gap to generate a lifting force. Such an energization is effected particularly when a scanning operation is started and stopped, in order to preclude damaging of the information disc. Energization requires a comparatively small amount of energy and the measure has a favorable effect on the required starting torque.

A device is set forth for interrupting a material flow by means of a shutter 5 fastened on a spindle 11, which spindle 11 is rotatably supported in a housing 1 of the device. The device is provided with a torsion spring 33 which is elastically deformable through rotation of the spindle 11, with substantially equal amounts of mechanical energy being stored in the torsion spring 33 through elastic deformation in a first position of the shutter 5. The material flow is shut off during this operation, and in a second position of the shutter 5 the material flow begins. The spindle 11 is provided with a permanent magnet 57 having pole shoes 61, 63 which are held against stops 109, 115 of a magnetic yoke 99 in the first position under the influence of the magnetic field of the magnet 57, and which are held against stops 111, 113 of the yoke 99 in the second position. The yoke 99 is provided with an electric coil 121. The shutter 5 is displaceable from a rest position to one of the two positions by an alternating current in the coil 121, whereas a direct current in the coil 121 attenuates the magnetic field of the magnet 57, so that the shutter 5 is displaced from the relevant position to the other position under the influence of the torsion spring 33. The device is suitable for use in a system for the deposition of materials in the form of thin layers on substrates. In such a system, the shutter 5 periodically interrupts a material flow coming from a source of material and aimed at the substrate, so that a desired composition of the layer is obtained.

A motor-compressor unit comprising a vibration motor (1) having a single-part magnetizable stator (2) in the form of a W, arcuate air gaps (9, 10) being formed between the peripheral surface (6) of the central limb 3 of the W and each of the outer limbs (4, 5) of the W, and an armature (11) which is reciprocatingly pivotable about a motor shaft (12). An X-ray tube having a rotary anode which is supported by a bearing system comprising an axial magnetic bearing and at least one radial sleeve bearing. In operation, mutually cooperating metal (e.g. W or Mo) supporting faces of the sleeve bearing are separated by a liquid layer wetting the supporting faces. The liquid layer consists of a metal or a metal alloy, such as Ga or a Ga alloy, whose vapor pressure at 300.degree. C. is below 10.sup.-5 N/m.sup.2, and which does not attack the supporting faces to any substantial extent. The tube has a long life, produces little noise during operation, and is of relatively simple construction.

Rotary anode X-ray tube

The invention relates to an X-ray tube. The tube has a rotary anode which is rotatably journalled by means of a magnetic bearing having a stator comprising a magnet yoke which intersects the outer walls of the tube and which is magnetizable by magnets arranged outside the tube. The magnet yoke comprises radially extending pole faces which enclose gaps in conjunction with radially extending pole faces of a rotor connected to the rotary anode. The rotor consists of a soft-magnetic disk, which provides the magnet yoke which closes the magnet yoke of the stator.

X-ray tube having a magnetically supported rotary anode

A multiphase electric machine whose stator winding is disposed in an air gap between a smooth stator wall and the rotor. The coils of the stator winding are wound stepwise in such a way that per coil the field variation in the direction of movement of the rotor is substantially sinusoidal and the winding has a constant thickness.
