A unique method/system for simultaneously creating and transferring a contrasting pattern of intelligence on and from an ablation-transfer imaging medium to a receptor element in contiguous registration therewith is not dependent upon contrast imaging materials that must absorb the imaging radiation and is well adopted for such applications as, e.g., color proofing and printing, the security coding of various documents and the production of masks for the graphic arts and printed circuit industries; the ablation-transfer imaging medium, per se, comprises a support substrate and an imaging radiation-, preferably a laser radiation-ablative topcoat essentially coextensive therewith, such ablative topcoat having a non-imaging ablation sensitizer and an imaging amount of a non-ablation sensitizing contrast imaging material contained therein.

Ablation-transfer imaging/recording

Provided is a UV-curable ink jet coating comprised of a copolymer or mixture of polyvinyl alcohol and polyethylene oxide, and a water-soluble polymer which can act as an electron and/or proton donor, preferably containing at least one carbonyl group. The entire mixture is UV cured once coated onto a substrate thereby creating a matrix due to crosslinking between the water soluble polymer and the polyvinyl alcohol/polyethylene oxide copolymer or mixture. The result is an ink receptive coating which will absorb many different ink jet inks very rapidly, while exhibiting high gloss. The ink jet medium thereby permits use with many different printers and inks.

Provided is a support for an ink jet recording material. The support comprises a substrate and a UV cured resinous coating layer on the substrate, with said resinous coating layer being comprised of a tetrafunctional polyester acrylate, a difunctional acrylic ester, a UV photoinitiator and a polyether.

An electrographic imaging element useful for forming colored images is described. The element contains an imaging layer structure and a support structure. The support structure contains an electrically conductive polymeric release layer formed by polymerizing a mixture containing a polymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated ammonium precursor; a polymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated, organo-silicone precursor; a polymerizable precursor containing at least two polymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated functional groups; optionally, a polymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated acidic precursor containing at least one carboxylic acid group; and, optionally, a monofunctional precursor containing one polymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated functional group. The element is particularly useful for forming large size images, such as are required for banners, billboards, and other out-of-doors advertisements.

Imaging element having a conductive polymer layer

An electrically conductive polymeric material useful in electrographic imaging elements is disclosed. The material comprises, in polymerized form: (1) a polymerizable, conductivity exalting comonomer selected from the group consisting of interpolymerizable acids with an acid number between 100 and 900, hydroxyalkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid, cyanoalkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid, and combinations thereof; (2) a polymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated ammonium precursor; and, optionally, (3) other polymerizable precursors. A layer of the material has an apparent surface resistivity of 1.times.10.sup.4 to 1.times.10.sup.7 .OMEGA./.quadrature..

Conductivity exaltation in radiation cured electrically conductive

A method for forming electrographic imaging elements comprising a uniform dielectric layer is disclosed. The method comprises coating a conductive coating composition containing polymerizable precursors onto a base, curing the composition to form a conductive layer, and coating a dielectric layer on top of the conductive layer. The elements can be used to produce images have higher image density, reduced background, reduced grain, reduced mottle, reduced overtoning, and greater small-scale uniformity than comparable images formed on electrographic imaging elements produced by other methods. The elements are particularly useful for forming large size colored images, such as are required for posters, displays, other indoor advertising.

Electrographic imaging element

A polymeric material which is both electrically conductive, possesses surface release properties and can be formed into high-gloss, visually transparent coatings; is polymerized from a liquid mixture of three free radical, addition polymerizable materials by radiation induced polymerization. The liquid mixture contains: 1 to 80 weight parts of an ethylenically unsaturated, quaternary ammonium precursor; 0.1 to 10 weight parts of an ethylenically unsaturated, organo-silicone precursor; and, 5 to 95 weight parts of a multifunctional precursor containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated groups, which is a multifunctional monomeric material, an oligomeric material or a combination thereof. Optionally, the liquid mixture may contain up to 60 weight parts of an ethylenically unsaturated acidic precursor and up to 50 weight parts of one other monofunctional precursor containing one ethylenically unsaturated group. By adjusting concentrations of the three polymerizable components, surface conductivity can be varied over a wide range from an electrical resistance of 10.sup.5 ohm/.quadrature. to 10.sup.12 ohm/.quadrature., without adversely affecting surface release characteristics. Such tailored co-polymers may be used as coatings, fibers or other solid shapes and are useful as electrically conductive release coatings in electrographic and electrostatic imaging materials; and as antistatic coatings for sheet or fiber products which further require protective surface release for easy removal of laminate components, markings, stains, dirt and the like.

This invention provides a class of cyclic silylureas and a process of preparing them, which process comprises reacting a cyclosilazane with an isocyanate containing moiety; a class of cyclosilazanes and process for making them, which process comprises heating an aminoalkylalkoxysilane in the presence of a basic catalyst at a temperature less than 100.degree. C. at subatmospheric pressure; and aminoalkylalkoxysilanes and a process for making them, which process comprises reacting a nitrile and a vinylsilane while heating in the presence of a base selected from the group consisting (a) an alkali metal, (b) alkali metal alkoxide, (c) an alkali metal amide, (d) an alkali metal hydride and (e) mixtures thereof to form a reaction product which is subsequently hydrogenated.

Cyclic silylureas and process of preparation

Conductivizing coating solutions prepared from cuprous iodide and ligands which are pyridine or monodentate pyridine derivatives provide excellent transparent, conductive coatings for use in electrophotographic and ground plane including articles. The coating compositions may also utilize solvents which solubilize the cuprous iodide-ligand complex formed. A method of forming transparent conductivizing coating solutions is also provided.

A method for removing odor from an aqueous solution of polymeric quaternary ammonium salt solution containing residual aliphatic tertiary amine and choline chloride or derivative thereof, said process comprising adding a sufficient amount of a non-volatile, stable, polybasic acid to react with said choline chloride or derivative thereof to prevent the formation of aliphatic tertiary amine from said choline chloride or derivative thereof. The present invention is also directed to a process for the preparation of recording film by treating as ethylene oxide neutralized conductive quaternary polymer solution with orthophosphoric acid and coating the treated solution directly onto a substrate.

A method for removing odor from an aqueous solution of polymeric quanternary ammonium salt solution containing residual aliphatic tertiary amine and choline chloride or derivative thereof, said process comprising adding a sufficient amount of a non-volatile, stable, polybasic acid to react with said choline chloride or derivative thereto to prevent the formation of aliphatic tertiary amine from said choline chloride or derivative thereof. The present invention is also directed to a process for the preparation of recording film by treating as ethylene oxide neutralized conductive quaternary polymer solution with orthophosphoric acid and coating the treated solution directly onto a substrate.

A catalyst for synthesis of vesicular phenoxy resins is disclosed. The catalyst includes a water-insoluble complex of a hydric phenol and a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium salt of the hydric phenol. Preferably, the hydric phenol is an intermediate of the phenoxy resin being produced. Dihydric phenols, such as sulfonyldiphenol are preferred. The invention further relates to a reaction medium for polymerization of phenoxy resins including the above-described catalyst and a solvent medium capable of dissolving the phenoxy resins and otherwise not interfering with the polymerization reaction. The solvent medium is advantageously free of toxic Methyl Cellosolve.

Disclosed are compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein n is 1 or 2; R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are alkyl or aralkyl; R.sup.3 is alkyl; when n is 1, R.sup.4 is alkyl, aralkyl, alkenyl, aralkenyl, aryl or a polyether radical having up to 10 ether groups; and when n is 2, R.sup.4 is alkylene, aralkylene, alkenylene, aralkenylene, arylene or a divalent polyether radical having up to 10 ether groups. The compounds are highly efficacious organic photoconductors for use in electrophotography, exhibiting improved pre-exposure fatigue resistance and blooming properties as compared with known photoconductors. Photoconductive elements containing these compounds are also described.
