Tertiary amine alanes are produced by reacting sodium aluminum hydride and magnesium dichloride. A tertiary amine is admixed to extract the tertiary amine alane. Stoichiometric ratios of sodium aluminum hydride to magnesium dichloride can be varied to effect the magnesium compound by-product produced.

Preparation of amine alanes

A process for selective reduction is provided wherein an organic compound containing a reducible group such as acid, acid chloride, ester, aldehyde, ketone, epoxide, amide, oxime, imine, nitrile, or the like, is reacted with a tertiary amine alane such that an alcohol or an amine is produced, substantially without reduction of another group in the molecule such as a halogen-containing functionality, nitro group, or double bond.

Selective reducing agents

A process comprising the reaction of an amine.aluminum trichloride complex and a bifluoride compound to produce an aluminum fluoride compound. Exemplary processes include the reaction of AlCl.sub.3.N(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.3) and NH.sub.4 HF.sub.2 or NaHF.sub.2 to respectively produce NH.sub.4 AlF.sub.4 or Na.sub.5 Al.sub.3 F.sub.14.

Preparation of complex aluminum fluorides

A process for the preparation of an amine complex of a metal halide which comprises reacting said metal with an amine hydrohalide. The process can be extended to the use of metals such as aluminum, magnesium, zinc, iron, and the like.

BF.sub.3 is removed from a promoted BF.sub.3 catalyzed olefin oligomer reaction product by contacting the reaction product with either solid or aqueous KF to form a solid KBF.sub.4 precipitate. Solid NaF or NH.sub.4 F can also be used.

Lithium aluminum hydride reacts with a tertiary amine to produce an amine alane and Li.sub.3 AlH.sub.6. Lithium values are recycled by reacting Li.sub.3 AlH.sub.6 with aluminum and hydrogen to produce LiAlH.sub.4. Since no metal halide by-product is produced in the first step, it has an advantage over other routes. The amine alane can react with SiF.sub.4 to produce silane and AlF.sub.3.

Preparation of amine alanes and lithium aluminum tetrahydride

A process is provided wherein tertiary ammonium trichlorosilyl, a complexing tertiary amine, and an alkali metal aluminum tetrahydride are reacted together in molar proportion of about 1:2:3, such that silane and tertiary amine alane are produced. Tertiary ammonium trichlorosilyl may be pre-formed or formed in situ by the reaction of trichlorosilane and tertiary amine. Yields are dramatically higher when the process is conducted in the presence of a tris(polyalkoxyalkyl)amine phase transfer catalyst. A sequential process is also provided for the preparation of silane and aluminum trifluoride. In the first part of this sequence, silane and tertiary amine alane are produced as described above. In the second part of the sequence, silicon tetrafluoride is reacted with the amine alane, producing additional silane and aluminum trifluoride.

A process for the reduction of an organosilicon halide to an organosilicon hydride using an amine alane hence avoiding the problem of dismutation of the hydrocarbyl group as well as avoiding cleavage of the silicon-carbon bonds associated with other methods for reduction of organosilicon halides.

A process for the preparation of an amine complex of an aluminum trihalide which comprises reacting aluminum with an amine hydrohalide. The process can be extended to the use of other metals besides aluminum, e.g. magnesium, zinc, or iron.

Process for retarding the decomposition of an amine alane, said process comprising contacting an amine alane which is substantially free of zirconium, hafnium, niobium, uranium, vanadium, and chromium, with an effective amount of a decomposition retarding agent selected from the class consisting of O.sub.2, CO, nitrogen axides and alkyl nitrites.

Stabilization of amine alanes

A process is described by which two useful products, silane and hydrocarbyloxyaluminun hydride, can be produced concurrently and in excellent yield. The process involves reaction between tetrahydrocarbyloxysilane such as Si(OEt).sub.4 and tertiary amine alane such as AlH.sub.3 .multidot.NEt.sub.3.

Process for retarding the decomposition of an amine alane, said process comprising contacting an amine alane which is substantially titanium-free, with an effective amount of a decomposition retarding agent selected from the class consisting of O.sub.2, CO, nitrogen oxides and alkyl nitrites.

Process for the preparation of silane and a tertiary amine alane, said process comprising reacting:

A process for making a dry metal halide salt which will not form an insoluble flocculent material upon dissolving in water in which an initial aqueous solution of a metal halide salt is prepared and a member selected from the group consisting of ammonium chloride, ammonium bromide, borate anion producing compounds and mixtures thereof is added. Water is then evaporated from the initial aqueous solution and a dry metal halide salt is obtained. Upon dissolving this dry metal halide salt in water a clear, colorless solution results which does not contain an insoluble flocculent material. Alternatively, the member compound may be added to the dry metal halide salt, before it is dissolved in water or the member compound may be added to the water which is used to dissolve the dry metal halide salt.
