Gold and silver are stripped from activated carbon on which they are adsorbed as cyanide complexes by subjecting the activated carbon to a stripping solution comprising as the strippant an effective amount of a compound containing the carboxylate functionality. The compound is preferably selected from benzoic and substituted benzoic acids, and polyacrylic acids of less than about 100,000 m.w.

Oil removal from water suspensions using ionic domain polymers

A modified liquid-liquid extraction system is disclosed in which a particulate solid and a liquid, both insoluble in a second liquid, are mixed to form agglomerate particles which efficiently extract metal ions from dilute solutions. The extraction is rapid and requires a much lower volume of extracting phase for good contacting than conventional liquid-liquid extraction. Mixing energy is low, clean-up of effluent water is easily accomplished and metal values are readily stripped from the agglomerates by well-known techniques, such as treatment by aqueous acid solution.

Metal extraction by solid-liquid agglomerates

A relatively low temperature process for separating and recovering bitumen from natural tar sands wherein granular sulfur and water are mixed with the tar sand, in the presence of air, to form a sulfur-bitumen agglomerate which floats on the water, with relatively bitumen-free sand sinking to the bottom. The agglomerate may be skimmed off the surface of the water and bitumen recovered therefrom by heating the agglomerate to melt the sulfur and then separating the molten sulfur from the hot bitumen. It has unexpectedly been discovered that a yield of over 80% of bitumen can be recovered from the tar sands by the use of sulfur in the process, compared to only about 20% if sulfur is not present.
