A bituminous composition comprising a bitumen emulsion in an amount from about 2% to about 10% by total weight of the bituminous composition, and aggregate in an amount from about 90% to about 99% by total weight of the bituminous composition, wherein the bituminous composition is at a temperature range of about 50&#xb0; C. to about 140&#xb0; C. The bitumen emulsion comprises hard bitumen in an amount from about 50% to about 75% by total weight of the bitumen emulsion, the hard bitumen being characterized by a penetration number of about 100 dmm or less at 25&#xb0; C. as determined according to the AASHTO Method T49, and an emulsifier in an amount from about 0.05% to about 2% by total weight of the bitumen emulsion, the emulsifier having a Hildebrand solubility parameter of at least of about 19 (MPa)&#xbd;. Also disclosed are the methods of producing and using such bituminous compositions.

Bituminous composition

This disclosure relates to bituminous compositions and methods of producing the same. More particularly, the disclosure relates to the production of bituminous compositions formulated with performance-graded bitumen-containing solvent-free bitumen emulsions which exhibit controllable, temperature-dependent interfacial rheology. When employed in paving applications, these bituminous compositions develop adhesive strength and load-bearing strength properties at rates comparable to traditional hot mix paving compositions and at rates faster than traditional cold mix paving compositions.

A bituminous composition including, based on total weight of the bituminous composition, (a) hard bitumen in an amount of 0.5% to 7.5% by weight, the hard bitumen being characterized by a penetration number of 100 dmm or less at 25&#xb0; C. as determined according to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Method T49; (b) emulsifier in an amount of 0.0005% to 0.2% by weight, wherein the emulsifier has a Hildebrand solubility parameter of at least 19 (MPa); (c) water; and (d) aggregate in an amount of 90% to 99% by weight, the aggregate having an aggregate surface that is wetted with the hard bitumen, wherein the bituminous composition is at a temperature ranging from 50&#xb0; C. to 140&#xb0; C.

A bituminous composition with improved paving performance, comprising a high-concentration-emulsifier bituminous emulsion is disclosed. The high-concentration-emulsifier bitumen emulsion has a higher content of surfactant than the conventional bitumen emulsion, thus facilitating the use of low levels of emulsion in the finished bituminous paving composition. Additionally, the high-concentration-emulsifier bitumen emulsion has superior surfactant dispersion property compared to the inverted bitumen dispersion, thereby enhancing the mixing and coating performance of the bituminous composition. The disclosed bituminous compositions may be used in a pavement construction at a much lower temperatures range compared to the conventional hot-mix bituminous composition, yet it develops adhesive strength and load-bearing strength properties at rates comparable to those of hot mix bituminous paving compositions.

Method for producing bituminous paving compositions

This invention relates to bituminous compositions and methods of producing the same. More particularly, the invention relates to the production of bituminous compositions formulated with performance-graded bitumen-containing solvent-free bitumen emulsions which exhibit controllable, temperature-dependent interfacial rheology. The present invention relates to bituminous compositions suitable for use in paving applications containing water-in-oil bitumen dispersion of paving grade bitumen such as penetration-graded, viscosity-graded and/or penetration-graded varieties that is substantially free of volatile solvents and made by controlling temperature-dependent interfacial rheology through the use of selected surfactants. The invention paving compositions are suitable for use in the construction of load-bearing, high-traffic pavements at a temperature range lower than that required for conventional hot-mix bituminous paving compositions, yet with similar or superior compaction to densities property and at least equal cure rate.

The present invention relates to bituminous compositions suitable for use in paving applications containing bitumen emulsion of performance-grade bitumen that is substantially free of volatile solvents and made by controlling temperature-dependent interfacial rheology through the use of selected emulsifiers. The invention bituminous paving compositions are suitable for the construction of load-bearing pavements with improved compaction to densities similar or superior to those achieved in the conventional hot mix bituminous paving compositions. Cure rate of the invention bituminous compositions is higher than those of cold mix bitumen emulsion-based paving compositions, and at least equal to those of hot mix bituminous paving compositions. Additionally, the invention bituminous compositions develop adhesive strength and load-bearing strength properties at rates comparable to those of hot mix bituminous paving compositions, and at rates faster than those of cold mix bituminous paving compositions.

Method for producing bitumen compositions

There is provided a method for making bituminous compositions comprising water-in-oil bituminous dispersion and aggregate by the steps of: preparing a solvent-free, water-in-oil bituminous dispersion comprising: (1) bitumen, in an amount from about 75.0% to about 95.0% by total weight of the bitumen dispersion; (2) a surfactant in an amount from about 0.05% to about 2.0% by total weight of the bitumen dispersion; and (3) water in an amount to complete the water-in-oil bituminous dispersion, and producing the bituminous composition having a temperature from about 50&#xb0; C. to about 120&#xb0; C. by mixing: (1) the water-in-oil bituminous dispersion of step (A), having a temperature from about 75&#xb0; C. to about 95&#xb0; C., in an amount from about 2.0% to about 10.0% by total weight of the bituminous composition, and (2) aggregate, having a temperature from about 60&#xb0; C. to about 140&#xb0; C., in an amount from about 90.0% to about 98.0% by total weight of the bituminous composition.

Water-in-oil bituminous dispersions and methods for producing paving compositions from the same

This invention relates to rapid set, medium set, and slow set anionic emulsions prepared from straight bitumen or bitumen modified by the incorporation of polymers such as styrene butadiene rubbers (SBR), styrene block copolymers (SBS), ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA), and other suitable modifiers. The invention also relates to emulsions modified by the incorporation of solvents (such as diesel oil or kerosene) or by the addition of polymer latices (such as SBR-latex or natural rubber latex). The adhesion promoting compositions utilized in these improved methods are produced by reacting tall oil fatty acid and/or modified tall oil fatty acid to yield a polyalkylene amine, then blending the polyamidoamine with Bis-hexamethylenetriamine to produce the adhesion promoter.

The invention is water-based printing inks and coatings formulated with stable low viscosity grind bases made from modified rosin grinding resins. These grinding resins are produced via the fusion esterification of fortified rosin with hydroxyacrylic resins and various polyols.
