Physical layer structures and access schemes for use in such networks are described and in particular initial access channel (IACH) structures are proposed. A spectrum efficient downlink (DL) IACH design supports different types of User Equipment (UE) capabilities and different system bandwidths. An IACH includes the synchronization channel (SCH) and broadcast-control channel (BCH). A non-uniform SCH for all system bandwidths is provided, as well as scalable bandwidth BCH depending on system bandwidth. An initial access procedure is provided, as well as an access procedure.

Spatial multiplexing and transmit diversity can improve the capacity of a wireless communication system. The system and method adapts communication schemes for communication systems with multiple antennas utilizing at least two transmission modes. The at least two transmission modes can, but are not necessarily, used for uplink communications. The two transmission modes may be chosen from the group consisting of a single antenna mode, a diversity mode a spatial multiplexed mode and a mixed diversity and spatial multiplexed mode. The at least two transmission modes may involve adaptation among multiple transmitters. At least one receiver may indicate a transmission mode to be used by a transmitter for a subsequent transmission. A transmitter may determine a transmission mode to be used for a subsequent transmission. The transmission mode can be based on channel sounding.

The present invention provides methods and devices for mitigating inter-cell interference in communication environments having a plurality of cells. In some embodiments, a time-frequency transmission resource that includes multiple sub-carriers over multiple OFDM symbol intervals is partitioned into a first zone and a second zone. In the first zone, transmissions are transmitted on at least one frequency sub-band which is common to all of the plurality of cells. In the second zone, transmissions are transmitted on at least one frequency sub-band which is used by less than all of the plurality of cells, so as to mitigate inter-cell interference. In some embodiments, in the first zone transmissions are transmitted using a transmission power which is common to all of the plurality of cells and in the second zone transmissions are transmitted using a transmission power which is used by less than all of the plurality of cells so as to mitigate inter-cell interference.

The method is for sending power control commands in a CDMA cellular radio system from a mobile station to a plurality of base stations with which the mobile station is in soft handoff. The mobile station receiving a signal from each of said base stations determines a power control command based upon the received signals. Such power control command is sent during a plurality of power control groups.

A control method allocates to a base station, at a control member of the base station, a list of channels shared by several terminals containing several sets of shared channels. The digital symbols of a sequence are assigned to respective positions in successive timeslots, according to a predetermined slot format. In a plurality of timeslots, a symbol of the sequence is replaced by a substitution symbol carrying additional information. A signal representing the sequence of symbols, which is divided into the timeslots, is transmitted on a communication channel. The production of the sequence includes an interleaving having an interleaving period longer than a timeslot, generally performed after a channel coding. The position of the substitution symbols in the timeslots which include them is varied, in order to optimize the performances of the transmission chain.

A scheme for multiplexing transport channels on one or several communication channels is used to operate in a normal mode and in a compressed mode which requires a lower symbol rate to provide in active periods in the communication channels. To match the symbol rate on each of the transport channels, a symbol puncturing is performed in two passes: marked symbols are introduced and are subjected, along with the other information symbols, to different operations including an interleaving, before being deleted from the transmitted sequence. Accordingly, those operations can be performed in the same manner in the normal and compressed modes, which limits the complexity of the communicating entities.

A preamble for a reverse access channel (RACH) of a CDMA (code division multiple access) communications system comprises a pair of constituent Golay sequences A and B concatenated with at least one pair, and preferably a plurality of different pairs, of transformed sequences which are also constituent Golay sequences, each pair of transformed sequences comprising a permutation of elements of the pair of sequences A and B. The permutations can include a reversed order of elements in the sequences, a reversed order of some or all of a set of address bits identifying locations of elements in the sequences, a concatenation of subsets of elements in odd and even locations of the sequences A and B, and combinations of these permutations. A method for providing the preamble, and related apparatus using a bidirectional counter and an address permutation unit, are described.
