An eye-tracking system includes two mirrors. A first mirror is positioned to transmit light, received at a first incident angle, reflected off an eye of a user toward a second mirror. The first mirror is also positioned to reflect the light, reflected from the second mirror, at a second incident angle. The second mirror is inclined from the first mirror so that the light transmitted through the first mirror is reflected by the second mirror toward the first mirror at a first reflection angle. The light reflected by the second mirror is reflected by the first mirror toward the second mirror at a second reflection angle greater than the first reflection angle. The eye-tracking system also includes one or more sensors positioned to detect the light reflected by the first mirror and the second mirror for determining a gaze direction of the eye of the user.

An electronic display includes a display panel that operates in a single display mode to provide a single display, or a dual display mode to provide two displays separated by an inactive region. The electronic display includes the display panel and a panel driver. The display panel includes a left pixel region, a right pixel region, and a middle pixel region between the left and right pixel regions. In the single display mode of the electronic display, the panel driver provides first gate signals generated from first input data to the left, right, and middle pixel regions. In a dual display mode, the panel driver provides second gate signals generated from second input data to the left and right pixel regions. The first input data has a first resolution that is larger than a second resolution of the second input data.

A head mounted display (HMD) includes an electronic display and a light director assembly. The electronic display includes a region of subpixels that are configured to emit light. The light director assembly is coupled to receive the light and to direct the light to an optical assembly of the HMD. The light director assembly includes a plurality of light directors configured to reduce an angular distribution of the light emitted from corresponding subpixels included in the region of subpixels.

An alignment apparatus for a polarization device includes a polarizer subassembly for polarizing a light beam, a rotary support for rotatably supporting the polarization device in a path of the light beam downstream of the polarizer subassembly, an analyzer subassembly downstream of the rotary support for receiving the light beam propagated through the polarization device, and a photodetector array disposed downstream of the analyzer subassembly and extending along the width dimension of the light beam for detecting the light beam propagated through the analyzer subassembly. At least one of the polarizer or analyzer subassemblies includes a spatially variant polarization element having a polarization property varying along the width dimension of the light beam.

Aligning a polarization device using a spatially variant polarization element

A display assembly of a head mounted display (HMD) includes a pancake lens display assembly. The pancake display assembly comprises a first lens with a quarter-waveplate and a partially reflective surface, a second lens with a reflective polarizer, and a display. An alignment system positions the first lens relative to the second lens to align the reflective polarizer of the second lens with the quarter-waveplate of the first lens. The alignment system rotates the first lens about an optical axis to position the quarter-waveplate on the first lens such that the quarter-waveplate and the reflective polarizer on the second lens are at an angle where light transmitted through the second lens and then through the first lens is substantially circularly polarized. The alignment system mounts the second lens to the lens housing such that the quarter-waveplate is at the angle relative to the reflective polarizer.

Active alignment of pancake lens based display assemblies

In systems and methods for adjusting the position of a headset element (e.g., a display and/or other optical element), coherent light (e.g., a laser beam) is transmitted through a display of a headset to produce a diffraction pattern on a detector, which detects the diffraction pattern. The orientation of the headset element is determined based in part on the detected diffraction pattern. Based on the determined orientation and a target orientation, an adjustment to the orientation of the headset element is determined. The position of the headset element is adjusted based on the determined adjustment. This method may be repeated until the headset element is determined to be correctly oriented.

A head-mounted display device includes one or more infrared light sources configured to emit infrared light toward one or more eyes of a wearer, a first mirror configured to transmit the infrared light reflected from the one or more eyes of the wearer toward the first mirror, that reaches the first mirror at a first incident angle, the second mirror configured to reflect the infrared light transmitted through the first mirror, toward the first mirror so that the first mirror is configured to reflect the infrared light reflected by the second mirror, and incident on the first mirror at a second incident angle that is greater than the first incident angle, one or more sensors configured to detect the infrared light reflected by the first mirror and the second mirror for determining a gaze direction of the one or more eyes of the wearer.

An optical element includes a Fresnel surface including valleys between Fresnel segments. Compensation trenches disposed in the valleys are configured to accept excess of an optical layer received in the valleys during a deposition of the optical layer. The compensation trenches are filled with the optical layer.

A headset includes a backlight assembly, a display panel, and an optics block. The backlight assembly includes an array of light emitting diodes (LEDs), a diffusing element, and a brightness enhancement film. The array of LEDs and the brightness enhancement film are configured in a way such that the light generated by the backlight assembly has a non-uniform brightness distribution. The display panel receives the light and convert the light to image light. The image light has at least the non-uniform brightness distribution. The optics block includes one or more optical elements that direct the image light to an eyebox of the headset. The optics block adds another non-uniform brightness distribution to the image light to offset the non-uniform brightness distribution from the backlight assembly, such that the image light directed to the eyebox has a target brightness distribution.

The disclosed method may include (1) providing, from a display, an image to an eye by way of a lens assembly on an optical path between the display and the eye, wherein the lens assembly includes (a) a first liquid crystal lens providing a first electronically controllable cylindrical power, oriented along a first constant axis, in response to a first signal and (b) a second liquid crystal lens providing a second electronically controllable cylindrical power, oriented along a second constant axis that is rotationally offset from the first constant axis, in response to a second signal, (2) determining, based on information indicating cylindrical power and cylindrical axis components, the electronically controllable cylindrical powers that result in providing the cylindrical power component, oriented along the cylindrical axis component, and (3) generating, based on the electronically controllable cylindrical powers, the signals. Various other systems and methods are also disclosed.

Systems and methods for astigmatism correction in a head-mounted display

A liquid crystal display (LCD) device including an LCD panel and a backlight. The backlight includes a plurality of light sources to emit light, and a reflective stack. The reflective stack is positioned to receive light emitted from the light sources and transmit the light to the LCD panel. The reflective stack includes optical elements providing a folded beam path for the light emitted from the light sources to the LCD panel. The light emitted from the light sources is diffused while propagating towards and away from the LCD panel along the folded beam path. The folded beam path has an optical distance that is longer than the spatial distance between the light sources and the LCD panel to improve light diffusion by the backlight without substantially increasing backlight thickness.
