Systems and methods for controlling downhole linear motors to minimize connections to surface equipment. In one embodiment, an ESP system is coupled by a power cable to equipment at the surface of a well. The ESP system includes a linear motor and a reciprocating pump. The motor has a set of position sensors that sense the position of a mover in the motor. Combining circuitry (E.G., XOR gate) combines the outputs of the position sensors into a single composite signal in which signal components corresponding to the position sensors are indistinguishable. A single channel carries the composite signal from the ESP system to the surface equipment. A control system determines a starting position of the motor and determines its subsequent position based on transitions in the composite signal. The motor is then operated based on the position determined from the composite signal.

Systems and methods for controlling downhole linear motors

A stuffing box assembly for a fluid end of a hydraulic fluid pump includes a stuffing box unit having a plunger bore configured to receive a plunger of the hydraulic fluid pump and a plurality of seals. The plunger bore extends from a first axial end of the stuffing box unit to a second axial end of the stuffing box unit. The plunger bore includes a first portion configured to receive the plurality of seals and a second portion extending between the first portion and the second axial end. The stuffing box assembly further includes a sensor coupled to the stuffing box unit and configured to determine a fluid pressure within the second portion of the stuffing box unit.

A system for monitoring a fluid end of a high pressure pump. The system is configured to receive, with a fluid end data logger attached to the fluid end, fluid end data from a plurality of sensors associated with the fluid end, and a fluid end identifier associated with the fluid end; tag, with an electronic processor in the fluid end data logger, the fluid end data with the fluid end identifier; store, with a memory coupled to the electronic processor, the tagged fluid end data; send, with a transceiver in the fluid end data logger, the tagged fluid end data to a power end; and receive, with the transceiver in the fluid end data logger, a power end data from the power end, the power end data including a power end identifier.

Systems and methods for fluid end monitoring

Systems and methods for detecting and arresting free fall of a mover in a linear motor for an ESP. In one embodiment, the motor of the ESP is initially automatically commutated, but is limited by the back pressure of the fluid being pumped. The drive system of the ESP monitors the speed of the mover in the linear motor and determines whether the speed of the mover exceeds a threshold speed (e.g., by determining whether time differentials between transitions in position sensor signals fall below a threshold value). If the speed of the mover does not exceed the threshold speed, the motor is deemed not to be in free fall. If the speed of the mover exceeds the threshold speed, the motor is considered to be in free fall, so automatic commutation of the motor is disabled and the mover is advanced through its stroke at a predetermined speed.

Systems and methods for operating linear motors, and for determining whether a linear motor has reached the end of its power and return strokes. In one embodiment, an electric drive controller of an ESP system monitors position signals received from the system's linear motor and determines transition time differentials, transition counts from the beginning of a stroke, elapsed stroke times and related parameters. If predetermined conditions relating to these parameters are met, the controller determines that the linear motor's mover has reached the end of its stroke. The controller therefore reverses the phase order of the drive's output power and thereby reverses the direction of the mover.
