The selection of multiple, suitably designed, demodulation reference signals can enable the measurement of a vehicle's speed using continuously transmitted frequency modulated (CTFM) signals. The unique solution of vehicle speed can be used to resolve the range Doppler ambiguity found in conventional CTFM sonar and radar systems. This can enable continuous range and speed estimates of high-speed vehicles with an attendant reduction in transmit power relative to pulse-echo systems with similar measures of performance due to the 100% duty cycle.

Localization of high speed vehicles using continuous transmit waves

An apparatus and method are provided for the in-situ measurement of the stiffness of a surface. The apparatus includes a platform, which is movable relative to the surface. A stiffness measurement device is supported by the platform in a stationary position relative to the surface for a measurement period during movement of the platform along the surface.

Soil compaction measurement on moving platform

An apparatus and method are provided for the in-situ measurement of the stiffness of a layer of soil or other surface of interest. The apparatus includes a contact foot for engaging the surface and a drive transducer coupled to the contact foot for applying a vibratory force to the contact foot in response to a drive signal. A motion sensor is coupled to the contact foot and in a preferred embodiment an additional sensor measures the force applied to the contact foot and hence to the surface. These sensors generate corresponding output signals. The output signals are used to generate a measurement signal that is representative of the surface stiffness.

Soil compaction measurement

A system and method to provide maximum power over large angular sectors using an array of transducers is disclosed. Array segments of transducers and phase shifters form a beam from each of the array segments, wherein the set of beams overlap to form a large sector coverage beam. The phase of each of the signals fed to the radiating elements is shifted, such that the difference between beam point directions of the beams of two adjacent array segments is substantially equal to one half of the sum of the beamwidths of the beams of the two adjacent array segments. The phase of each of the signals fed to the radiating elements may also be shifted in proportion to the square of the distance between one end of the array of transducers and the position of each of the plurality of radiating elements.
