A glyoxal and boron free purified cationic polygalactomannan may be prepared by reacting a polygalactomannan flour, a nonionically derivatized polygalactomannan flour, or a mixture thereof, with a cationising reagent, adjusting the pH to be from about 4 to about 6; cross-linking the cationic with glyoxal, and filtering and water washing the cationic polygalactomannan to produce a glyoxalated purified cationic polygalactomannan containing not more than 70% by weight of water. In some cases it may be desirable to introduce a buffering agent to the glyoxalated purified cationic polygalactomannan to regulate the pH to from 8.0 to about 9.5, when measured at 1% (dry matter) in water. In other cases, it may be desirable to remove water to produce glyoxal free purified cationic polygalactomannan in powder form. Such compounds are particularly useful in personal care products.

Cationic hydrophobically modified galactomannan ethers having a cationic degree of substitution (DS) from 0.01 to 0.5 and hydrophobic degree of substitution (DS) below 0.001 are readily soluble in aqueous systems and useful to thicken, stabilize and condition cosmetics, detergent compositions and household cleaning products; they further improve the deposition of other ingredients on the treated surface (skin, hair or fabric).

Procedure for the preparation of cationic guar having DS comprised between 0.01 and 3, free from boron and suitable for the use in the cosmetic field and in household cleaning products, comprising the following steps: a) 100 parts by weight of guar flour are reacted with 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride and sodium hydroxide in from 5 to 500 parts by weight of a water and alcohol mixture containing from 20 to 50% by weight of water; b) the amount of water and alcohol is regulated in order to obtain a dispersion containing from 65 to 95% by weight of a of water and alcohol mixture containing from 30 to 50% by weight of water and the dispersion is maintained under stirring at temperature comprised between 15 and 40&#xb0; C. for at least 10 minutes; c) the mixture is filtered under vacuum and dried to obtain the purified cationic guar.

Rheology modifying admixture comprising a) from 80 to 99% w/w of hydroxyalkyl guar, cellulose ether, or mixture thereof; b) from 1 to 20% w/w of biopolymer selected from diutan gum and welan gum, and hydraulic compositions containing the rheology modifier admixture together with a superplasticizer.

The present invention relates to a new method of protection of the carboxy group in the chemistry of the compounds of .beta.-lactam type. According to such a method, the carboxy group is protected by being transformed into its corresponding phenyl-acetoxy-methyl ester, which is then removed by an enzymatic route by means of penicillinacylase. In particular, if the .beta.-lactam compound also bears a phenyl-acetamidic substitutent, this latter is simultaneously hydrolysed during the same step of removal of the carboxy function protecting group.
