The present invention provides a PVR system and control method thereof, by which a user is facilitated to synthesize and combine a multitude of videos or broadcast programs. The present invention includes a decoder selecting at least one of a plurality of reception video streams to decode the selected video stream, a PVR engine reading a first index file including video features and addresses of previously stored video streams, the PVR engine generating a second index file including video features and addresses of the selected video stream, the PVR engine links the first and second index files to each other to combine the previously stored video stream and the selected video stream, and a storage means for storing the video streams and the index files corresponding to the video streams.

Personal video recorder and control method thereof for combining first and second video streams

Fast encoding method and system are provided which can transmit video data in real time using adaptive intra prediction in accordance with the H.264/AVC (Advanced Video Codec) standard so as to efficiently provide security-related images or multimedia images in various network environments with high quality. An intra prediction method of compressing and encoding an image includes the steps of: comparing an SAD value C calculated from macro block data of a present frame and a previous frame with a reference value K to determine a prediction method; and selectively performing on input macro block data a first method of determining a best mode and a block size by prediction in a plurality of prediction modes based on spatial directivity and generating prediction data and a second method of generating prediction data using the best mode and the block size used in the previous frame, depending on the determined prediction method.

Fast encoding method and system using adaptive intra prediction

A system and method for video decoding, including decoding video data from an input Transport Stream (TS) bitstream, variable-length-decoding the decoded video data, and restoring pixel values of an original picture through an Inverse Quantization process, an Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform process, and an Motion Compensation process from the variable-length-decoded video data; analyzing characteristics of video data based on error information, header information, and macroblock information extracted from the decoded video data to generate analysis information and generating thumbnail image; storing the generated thumbnail image; generating meta data information based on the generated analysis information and controlling to store the generated meta data information; controlling to search the stored input TS bitstreams in the storage medium according to the stored meta data information; and controlling to store the generated thumbnail image, read the stored image, and display an Electronic Program Guide with the read thumbnail image.

PVR-support video decoding system

An MPEG video decoding system with a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) function is disclosed. By applying the PVR function to an MPEG-2 decoder chip, which is the standard recommendation of the digital video transmission field, diverse high-performance PVR services such as video storage and search using an HDD application in the video decoder chip can be used, and two HD-class displays can simultaneously be supported. Also, the features of the video TS bitstream stored through the video decoding chip having a proposed PVR engine can be extracted in real time, and the playback or trick play of the stored video contents can be diversely and easily performed. According to the PVR-support video decoding system, an improved storage and search function of a video bitstream, and diverse video services can be provided, and the added value of the digital video recorder can be heightened.

An MPEG video decoding system including: a buffer for storing an MPEG-formatted or a DV-formatted video signal; a VLD/IQ unit for performing a variable length decoding and an inverse quantization of the video signal; an IDCT device for selectively performing an 8&#xd7;8 IDCT and a 4&#xd7;8 IDCT according to the format of the inversely quantized signal; an adder for bypassing and storing the output signal of the IDCT unit into an external memory if the output signal of the IDCT unit is an MPEG-formatted I-picture or a DV format, and for adding the IDCT-ed signal and a motion compensated signal if the output signal of the IDCT device is an MPEG-formatted P-picture or B-picture; and a motion compensator for performing a motion compensation outputting the motion compensated signal to the adder, if the output signal of the IDCT device is the MPEG-formatted P-picture or the MPEG-formatted B-picture.

MPEG video decoding system

An apparatus and method for processing video signals, which can selectively freeze any one of two or more images being displayed, are disclosed. The apparatus includes a video decoder decoding at least one video stream in picture units, by using a plurality of decoding frames and at least one freezing frame, a memory storing in picture units the decoded video stream outputted from the video decoder, and a plurality of video processors reading the stored video stream from the memory and transforming the stored video stream to displayable data.

Apparatus and method for processing video signals

Disclosed is a video transcoding apparatus converting a specific bit rate of an MPEG (moving pictures experts group) bit stream into a different rate thereof for transportation. The present invention includes a video pre-processing unit having a predetermined matrix structure and down-sampling a macro block decoded by the video decoder by transforming the macro block into a corresponding picture structure to the compressed video bit stream, a transcoding parameter control unit detecting information about a picture from a previous bit stream variable-length-decoded by the video decoder and setting up an encoding mode for a transcoding in accordance with the detected information, etc. Therefore, the present invention does not need the motion estimation unit of encoder and reduce the complexity of the bit allocation unit. When changing HD-rated MPEG sequence over 10 Mbps into NTSC-rated MPEG sequence below 6 Mbps, the present invention reduces calculation time and complexity of hardware.

Video transcoding apparatus

An apparatus and method of transcoding a video snap image is disclosed. The apparatus includes a video decoder for performing a variable length decoding (VLD), inverse discrete cosine transform (IDCT), and inverse quantization with respect to an input bit stream to display the decoded bit stream, a DC extraction section for extracting DC components from discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients of variable-length-decoded macro blocks, an adder for averaging the extracted DC components, a differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) section for obtaining and outputting a difference value between the DC component averaged by the adder or the DC component outputted from the DC extraction section and a DC component of a previous macro block, a Huffman encoding section for Huffman-encoding the difference value outputted from the DPCM section, and a storage device for storing a Huffman-encoded snap image and the video bit stream.

Apparatus and method of transcoding video snap image

A method and an apparatus of transcoding image data in a digital TV system are disclosed. The method and apparatus of the present invention performs global and local motion compensation processes while converting the particular data bit rate of input image data to a different data bit rate. As a result, the quality of the image can be greatly improved compared to other existing techniques. When there is no global motion detected in an image frame, the local motion compensation is performed based on new local motion vectors estimated or on the previous local motion information.

Apparatus and method of transcoding image data in digital TV

A memory reducing device in an apparatus for receiving moving pictures is applied to the fields such as a digital television receiver, a digital video conference system and the like. The memory reducing device enables to reduce an external memory of an MPEG-2 video decoding chip and obtain standard deviations by predicting the current pixel using a pixel located at the highly-related direction which is determined by having the deviation estimating part measure the relation between the horizontal or vertical direction of the pixels adjacent there between and to be currently encoded. Moreover, the memory reducing device enables to increase a compression ratio as well as provide clear distinction of high definition by reducing the difference less than the bit precision of the current pixel by means of predicting the current pixel by selecting the pixel located at the highly-related direction with the above same method and performing quantization with the prediction.

Apparatus for receiving moving pictures

A video decoder decodes a video signal based on a down conversion function. The video decoder includes a variable length decoder which analyzes a received compressed video stream and extracts motion signals. The analyzed bitstream is converted into a macro block through an inverse quantizer and inverse discrete cosine transform unit in succession, and a motion compensator compensates up-sampled data using the extracted motion signals. Data from the IDCT and data from the motion compensator are added, down-sampled by an adaptive down sampler, and stored in an external memory. For motion compensation, the adaptive up-sampler up samples the data down-sampled at the adaptive down sampler, and the result is provided to the motion compensator.

Video decoder with down conversion function and method for decoding video signal

A method for recovering a moving picture in which an error occurs provides a more efficient and accurate recovery by enlarging a range of a damaged slice to include regions of undamaged slices adjacent to the damaged slice. Particularly, damaged macro blocks within the damaged slice may be upwardly and downwardly extended. Motion vectors for the extended portions are obtained and used to establish a search region within a previous frame. A closest match for the extended macro block is located within the search region and a portion thereof is replicated to replace the damaged macro block.

Method for recovering moving picture by extending a damaged region in which an error occurs

An apparatus for receiving motion pictures is disclosed. The present invention reduces an external memory in an MPEG-2 decoding chip, which is a standard device in the field of digital video transmission. Particularly, a data processing structure is disclosed for compressing video-decoded data in an ADPCM method and storing the same in an external memory so as to ease compensation for motion in a macro-block unit of the MPEG-2 standard device as well as to maintain motion pictures of high definition.
