A display device and method of operating the display device is disclosed. The display device and method accurately compensate for the degradation of subpixels by monitoring the degradation in real time using an optical electronic device located under, or at a lower portion of, a display panel and partially overlapping an optical area in the display area. Such monitoring of the degradation can be performed in real time using such an optical element or device even in a situation where the display device is used, and the compensation of the degradation can be performed in real time in accordance with the result of the monitoring.

Display device and method of operating the same

A display device is disclosed that provides a compensation function using a movable sensor structure. The display device may sense luminance characteristics of subpixels and reduce or eliminate luminance deviations between subpixels without performing complicated sensing driving on subpixels of the display panel. The display device includes: a display panel including data lines, a gate lines, and subpixels, each of the subpixels including a light emitting device and a driving transistor; a housing protecting the display panel; a moving bar installed in the housing so as to be movable and moving at a front of a viewing surface of the display panel; sensor modules mounted on the moving bar to face the viewing surface of the display panel; and a sensing controller configured to control movement of the moving bar, control an operation of the sensor modules, and receive sensing values of each of the sensor modules.

The present disclosure relates a method for compressing data and a display device using the same, which firstly generates a quantization grid to which a quantization step value is assigned at positions thereon corresponding to positions of the plurality of pixels, assigns the quantization step value using a preset quantization parameter and a quantization function determined according to a dimension of an array, and quantizes data, which is assigned to a pixel located at a position corresponding to a position of the quantization step value, using the quantization step value when the quantization step value is assigned. As such, in accordance with the present disclosure, it may prevent a data loss due to compression of data from being concentrated on pixels located at specific concentrated positions. That is, in accordance with the present disclosure, a data loss due to quantization may be spatially distributed.

A method of compressing data comprising separating a bit stream of compensation data into a sub-bit stream including an impulse component and a sub-bit stream not including the impulse component, predicting and calculating a trend component of compensation data to be compressed using compressed compensation data, generating a noise component by eliminating the trend component from the compensation data, and separating and compressing an impulse component and a noise component of the compensation data from each other, wherein the impulse component is compressed without quantization and the noise component is quantized and compressed.

The liquid crystal display includes a liquid crystal panel, a backlight unit that supplies light to the liquid crystal panel and has a plurality of light sources, and an image calibration unit that calculates a global dimming resultant value and a local dimming resultant value for an image data signal inputted to the liquid crystal panel, analyzes an average picture level for each block with respect to the image data signal, and determines a convex combination parameter based on the global dimming resultant value, the local dimming resultant value, and the average picture level to generate a calibration dimming value for the backlight unit and an image calibration value for the image data signal.
