An energy harvesting imaging sensor includes an array of pixel structures each formed from a semiconductor having a photodiode overlying a photovoltaic diode. The photodiode and photovoltaic diode are implemented as a vertically stacked P+/N/Pjunction. This structure enables simultaneous imaging and energy harvesting by generating charge in the photodiode that is indicative of light impinging on the photodiode and simultaneously generating charge from the light in the photovoltaic diode located underneath the photodiode.

An optoelectrode having a lens optically coupled between a light source and a light guide and a method of making an optoelectrode. In one embodiment of the optoelectrode, the lens is a gradient index (GRIN) lens and the light source is a side-emitting injection laser diode (ILD). The optoelectrodes can be implemented such that they are high density, highly compact, monolithically integrated, and can deliver multicolor light output independently and simultaneously at a common waveguide port using an optical mixer, for example. In a preferred embodiment, the optoelectrodes are used as neural probes.

A biological recording device used to monitor biological electrical activity and a method of recording neural signals. In a preferred embodiment, the biological recording device is a neural probe. The biological recording device includes a probe body with a probe shank and a recording platform that uses a delta (&#x394;) modulator and a delta sigma analog to digital converter (&#x394;&#x3a3; ADC). The &#x394; modulator and the &#x394;&#x3a3; ADC form a &#x394;-&#x394;&#x3a3; analog front end (AFE) architecture for processing biological electrical activity. A large dynamic range (DR) of neural signals, including local field potentials (LFPs) and action potentials (APs) for example, can be compressed and subsequently reconstructed.

A method and apparatus for generating a depth value corresponding to a subject by using a depth camera includes dividing a predetermined time section into n sub-time sections in order to measure the depth value, acquiring a voltage value corresponding to the amount of light reflected from the subject in each sub-time section, by using at least one photodiode included in the depth camera, quantizing the voltage value to any one level among predetermined levels, on the basis of the acquired n voltage values, and outputting the quantized value.

A CMOS imaging sensor with embedded feature extraction capability operatable in different modes by a method that includes the steps of: (a) operating the CMOS imaging sensor in a motion-detecting mode at a first power level using circuitry on the imaging sensor that generates motion data based on received images detected by pixels in the pixel array; (b) switching the imaging sensor from the motion-detecting mode to a feature extraction mode in response to detecting motion; and (c) operating the imaging sensor in the feature extraction mode at a second power level that is higher than the first power level.

A pulse width modulated power converter is presented with load-adaptive power transistor scaling scheme using analog-digital hybrid control. The coarse digital control generates an approximate duty cycle necessary for driving a given load and selects an appropriate width of power transistors to minimize redundant power dissipation. The fine analog control provides the final tuning of the duty cycle to compensate for the error from the coarse digital control. The mode switching between the analog and digital controls is accomplished by a mode arbiter which estimates the average duty cycle for the given load condition from limit cycle oscillations induced by the coarse adjustments.

Hybrid control architecture for load-adaptive power converter

A neural interface for measuring or stimulating brain neural activity, either as a standalone unit or as a part of a larger system of similar neural interfaces. The neural interface includes a bolt-shaped housing having a tool-engaging head and threaded shank with internal circuitry and at least one electrode. In use, the housing is threaded into a cranial bore such that the electrode contacts the outer surface of the meninges. The neural interface circuitry includes an SAR ADC that provides at least rail-to-rail operation to convert received signals from the electrode(s) into digital data that can be modulated and wirelessly transmitted by intra-skin or other suitable communication.

A background light suppression apparatus and method capable of suppressing influences of background light in a depth sensor includes measuring output signals of sub pixels for a sub integration time shorter than a frame integration time; and integrating differences between the output signals after the sub integration time.

Method and apparatus for suppressing background light in time of flight sensor

A neural probe is disclosed for optically stimulating or silencing neurons and recording electrical responses to the stimulus. Using patterning techniques, an integral optical waveguide may be fabricated on the probe for transmitting neuron-affecting light from a light source to a probe tip. The probe tip may include one or more electrodes to receive electrical responses from stimulated neurons for recording or further processing. According to various embodiments, the disclosed neural probes may utilize multiple light sources simultaneously, switch between multiple light sources, or utilize a single light source to stimulate or silence multiple neuron locations simultaneously via multiple probe tips or via multiple light-emitting sites located along the length of the probe. Neural probes are thereby provided that have sufficient spatial resolution to accurately target, stimulate, and record the reaction of neurons, or as few as a single neuron, utilizing a slim, compact structure.

A neural probe () is provided for in vivo communication with biological tissue, including stimulating neurons and/or recording neural electrical activity. The probe () may be constructed so that the immune response by the biological tissue in which the device is implanted is reduced over known implantable probes. The probe () can be constructed with a tip () that has a branched configuration, with electrodes () located along each of the branches (). A biodegradable coating () is disposed over at least the tip () of the probe () to provide the probe () with sufficient integrity for insertion into the biological tissue and to degrade after insertion. The biodegradable coating () can have an anti-inflammatory drug or other bioagent distributed therein for localized release of the bioagent to further reduce the immune response.

Insertable neural probe with flexible structure

A bioamplifier that includes a high pass filter, open-loop amplifier, and low pass filter in an area efficient design that can be used in implantable neural interfaces. The high pass filter can be implemented by using a switch-capacitance resistor coupled with parasitic capacitance of the electrode. The amplifier can be chopper stabilized and can include a high gain, current-ratio first stage followed by one or more dimension-ratio stages. The low pass filter utilizes the output impedance of the open-loop amplifier to form an embedded g-C low pass filter.
