Methods for protecting turbochargers of engine systems include determining a speed gradient of the turbocharger and implementing a turbocharger speed protection action if the determined speed gradient is above a speed gradient threshold. Implementing a protection action comprises limiting engine torque, engine speed, vehicle speed, and/or fuel injection to the engine. The method can further include determining a cold start condition prior to determining the speed gradient of the turbocharger. A cold start condition can be determined based on ambient temperature, engine oil temperature, or engine coolant temperature. The method can further include, subsequent to implementing the turbocharger speed protection action, disabling the turbocharger speed protection action when a subsequently determined turbocharger speed gradient is below the speed gradient threshold. Systems for implementing the methods are also disclosed.

A two stage turbocharger for an internal combustion engine, the two stage turbocharger comprising a high pressure turbine fluidly connected to an exhaust manifold of the engine through a high pressure turbine inlet duct and a low pressure turbine fluidly connected to the high pressure turbine through a low pressure turbine inlet duct, wherein the low pressure turbine is a variable geometry turbine, wherein the two stage turbocharger comprise a bypass duct system to bypass the variable geometry low pressure turbine, wherein the bypass duct system comprises a bypass valve.

A lubricating oil filter assembly is provided for an internal combustion engine that includes, but is not limited to a body provided with: an oil inlet, an oil outlet, a conduit connecting the oil inlet to the oil outlet, and a chamber suitable for accommodating a filter element, the chamber being in communication with the oil inlet and with the oil outlet. The lubricating oil filter assembly further includes, but is not limited to a valve assembly arranged within the conduit to enable a flow of lubricating oil in dependence of the pressure of the lubricating oil at the oil inlet.

A two-stage turbocharged engine system is provided. The two-stage turbocharged engine system includes an internal combustion engine, a high-pressure turbocharger having a high-pressure turbine for rotating a high-pressure compressor through a connecting shaft, and a low-pressure turbocharger having a low-pressure turbine for rotating a low-pressure compressor by a connecting shaft. The two-stage turbocharged engine system also includes a low-pressure intake line for fluidly connecting the outlet of low-pressure compressor to the inlet of high-pressure compressor, a high-pressure intake line for fluidly connecting the outlet of high-pressure compressor to an air cooler, and a bypass device for selectively fluidly connecting a first branching point located in low-pressure intake line to a second branching point located in high-pressure intake line to thereby bypass the high-pressure compressor. The bypass device is located closer to the low-pressure compressor than to the high-pressure compressor.
