An electronically insulating proton conductor (C) is adhered or deposited as a film on a dense phase proton permeable material (D) in a thicknees such that the composite C/D has a proton conductivity in a preferred intermediate temperature range of 175-550&#xb0; C. The composite C/D is incorporated in a high temperature electrolyte membrane electrolyte assembly (MEA), which is incorporated into a fuel cell that can operate in this intermediate temperature range. The fuel cell in turn is incorporated into a fuel cell system having a fuel reformer in the flow field of a fuel mixture entering the fuel cell or in a mode where the fuel cell receives fuel from an external reformer.

Electrolyte components for use in fuel cells

A process and apparatus for rapidly screening materials using, for example, mass spectrometry has been developed. More specifically, an array of materials on a fluid permeable support contained within a reaction cell having a semipermeable membrane can be rapidly screened for characteristics such as catalytic activity, selectivity, and adsorption and desorption properties.

Heat activated membrane introduction apparatus and method for screening materials

A novel process and apparatus to combinatorially screen a large number of discrete compositions for electrocatalytic activity have been developed. The apparatus contains a cell body adjacent to a fluid permeable catalyst array support supporting multiple solids. A catalyst mask having holes that are in alignment with the multiple locations for supporting solids is placed over the catalyst array support, masking the solids. A cell cover is positioned adjacent to the catalyst array support, with the cell cover having a passage for monitoring the solids through the mask. A detector may be in alignment with the passage of the cell cover.

Method of screening compositions for electrocatalytic activity in a gas diffusion electrode

A high throughput screening device for combinatorial chemistry, comprising a membrane electrode assembly, an array of sensor electrodes and one or more common electrodes, wherein a total cross-sectional area of the one or more common electrodes is greater than a sum of the cross-sectional areas of the sensor electrodes is disclosed. This device obtains performance data from each and every array electrode simultaneously and does not require the movement of any electrode during data acquisition. Some application among many possible applications of the device of this invention is in the development and evaluation of catalysts (anode and cathode catalysts) for fuel cells and electrolysis systems.

High throughput screening device for combinatorial chemistry

Compositions for use as catalysts in electrochemical reactions are described. The compositions are alloys prepared from two or more elemental metals selected from platinum, molybdenum, osmium, ruthenium, rhodium, and iridium. Also described are electrode compositions including such alloys and electrochemical reaction devices including such catalysts.

Electrocatalyst compositions

A catalyst composition for use in electrochemical reactor devices comprising platinum, ruthenium, and osmium and having a single phase crystal structure comprising a face centered cubic unit cell. In accordance with a particularly preferred embodiment, in atomic percentages, platinum comprises about 65% of the catalyst composition, ruthenium comprises about 25% of the catalyst composition, and osmium comprises about 10% of the catalyst composition.
