Disclosed are catalysts in powdered form comprising a major amount of the oxides of a first metal selected from copper or zinc, a second metal selected from chromium, molybdenum, tungsten and vanadium, and optionally, a minor amount of the oxide of a promoter metal selected from the group consisting of manganese, barium, zinc, nickel, cobalt, cadmium, iron and any combination thereof provided that the promoter metal is not zinc if the first metal is zinc, wherein the average particle diameter of the powder is from about 6 to about 20 microns; and the particle surface area is from about 20 to about 70 m.sup.2 /g. Also disclosed is a process for preparing such catalysts and a process for hydrogenating aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and carboxylic acid esters with catalysts of the type described.

In one embodiment,the invention relates to a formed copper chromite catalyst prepared from a blend comprising from about 20 to about 80% by weight of copper chromite and from about 20 to about 80% by weight of at least one extrudable inorganic binder material wherein the catalyst has a surface area of from about 20 to about 225 m.sup.2 /g, and the total pore volume of the pores in said catalyst having a diameter of up to about 95,000 .ANG. is between about 0.35 to about 1 cc/g. A hydrotreating catalyst is described which comprises at least one Group VI metal, metal oxide, or metal sulfide, and at least one Group VIII metal, metal oxide, or metal sulfide, supported on a carrier wherein (A) the catalyst comprises from about 10% to about 35% by weight of combined metal, and the atomic ratio of the Group VIII metal to Group VI metal is in the range of from about 0.5:1 to about 2:1; (B) the carrier comprises from about 0.5 to about 10 weight percent of halogen, from about 0.5 to about 5% by weight of silica and from about 85 to about 99% of alumina; and (C) the catalyst is characterized as having a median pore radius of from about 30 to about 65 Angstroms, and a surface area of from about 120 to about 180 m.sup.2 /g. Also described are novel and improved procedures for preparing the catalyst is useful in the production of lubricating oils from crude hydrocarbon oil stocks in that the hydrotreating process results in the formation of oils having increased viscosity indexes, reduced aromatic content and improved stability. The catalysts of this invention can be used effectively in either or both stages of a two-stage hydrotreating process or in a single stage hydrotreating process. The nitrogen and sulfur contents of the oils also are reduced through the use of the catalyst in the hydrogenation process.

A hydrotreating catalyst is described which comprises at least one Group VI metal, metal oxide, or metal sulfide, and at least one Group VIII metal, metal oxide, or metal sulfide, supported on a carrier wherein (A) the catalyst comprises from about 10% to about 35% by weight of combined metal, and the atomic ratio of the Group VIII metal to Group VI metal is in the range of from about 0.5:1 to about 2:1; (B) the carrier comprises from about 0.5 to about 10 weight percent of halogen, from about 0.5 to about 5% by weight of silica and from about 85 to about 99% of alumina; and (C) the catalyst is characterized as having a median pore radius of from about 30 to about 65 Angstroms, and a surface area of from about 120 to about 180 m.sup.2 /g. Also described are novel and improved procedures for preparing the carrier or support used to prepare the catalysts. Hydrotreating catalyst

An extruded copper chromite-alumina catalyst is prepared by blending together from 40-82% by weight of copper chromite and 18-60% of an extrudable alumina, typically having a pseudoboehmite or .alpha. hydroxy boehmite structure. The extruded catalyst after calcining is useful for the liquid and vapor phase hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis of various carbonyl compounds and the functional side groups of aromatic compounds. The extruded catalyst is characterized as having a surface area of between 20 and 225 square meters per gram and a packed apparent bulk density of between about 0.70 and about 1.20 g/cc.
