This disclosure relates to a process for producing titanium dioxide, comprising: a) reacting an alloy comprising a metal selected from the group consisting of aluminum, titanium and mixtures thereof, wherein either aluminum or titanium is a major component of the alloy, and an element selected from the group consisting of Li, Be, B, Na, Mg, Al, P, S, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Cd, In, Sn, Sb, Te, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, Au, Hg, Tl, Pb, and Bi, with chlorine gas to form chlorides of aluminum, titanium or mixtures thereof and chlorides of the element selected from the group consisting of Li, Be, B, Na, Mg, Al, P, S, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Cd, In, Sn, Sb, Te, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, Au, Hg, Tl, Pb, and Bi, at or above the boiling point of the chloride of the major component of the alloy; with the proviso that the element does not comprise Ti when the metal is Ti and does not comprise Al when the metal is Al; (b) adding titanium tetrachloride to the chlorides formed in step (a); (c) oxidizing the chlorides formed in step (a), and titanium tetrachloride of step (b); and (d) forming titanium dioxide dioxide comprising the oxide of aluminum and an oxide of an element selected from the group consisting of Li, Be, B, Na, Mg, Al, P, S, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Cd, In, Sn, Sb, Te, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, Au, Hg, Tl, Pb, and Bi.

Process for in-situ formation of chlorides in the preparation of titanium dioxide

A process for producing titanium dioxide, comprising: a) reacting an alloy comprising a metal selected from the group consisting of aluminum, titanium and mixtures thereof, wherein one metal is a major component of the alloy, and an element, with chlorine gas to form chlorides of aluminum, titanium or mixtures thereof and chlorides of the element, at or above the boiling point of the chloride of the major component of the alloy; with the proviso that the element does not comprise Ti when the metal is Ti and does not comprise Al when the metal is Al; (b) adding titanium tetrachloride to the chlorides formed in step (a); (c) oxidizing the chlorides formed in step (a), and titanium tetrachloride of step (b); and (d) forming titanium dioxide.

The present invention relates to processes for making anodes suitable for use in the production of titanium metals. The processes use a kneaded mixture of TiOparticles, carbon particles, a binder, and a solvent. The mixture is extruded and the solvent is allowed to evaporate to form a green body which is subsequently fired. During firing of the green body, the carbon particles aid in reducing the titanium dioxide to a lower oxide or oxycarbide which can be electrochemically processed into titanium metal.

Processes for making titanium production anodes

A process which can be used in oligomerization, polymerization, or depolymerization such as, for example, the production of a polyester is provided. The process comprises contacting a carbonyl compound, in the presence of a composition, with an alcohol. The catalyst comprises a catalyst having the formula of M.sub.x Ti.sup.(III) Ti.sup.(IV).sub.y O.sub.(x+3+4y)/2 wherein M is an alkali metal, Ti.sup.(III) is titanium in the +3 oxidation state, Ti.sup.(IV) is titanium in the +4 oxidation state, x and y are numbers greater than or equal to zero wherein if x equals zero, y is a number less than 1/2.

Catalysis with titanium oxides

A beta phase of molybdenum trioxide or the mixed metal oxides of molybdenum and tungsten is prepared by spray-freezing then freeze-drying, affording a powder which is then heated to a temperature of 275.degree. C. to 450.degree. C.
