Inorganic fullerene-like particles and inorganic tubular-like particles in fluids and lubricants

In one embodiment, a coating is provided that includes a deposition surface, and a coating on the deposition surface. The coating may include particles of a metal chalcogenide comprising a fullerene-like geometry, a tubular-like geometry or a combination of fullerene-like geometries and tubular-like geometries. The metal chalcogenide composition has a molecular formula of MX.

Coating including inorganic fullerene-like particles and inorganic tubular-like particles

A drilling fluid including a drilling fluid medium selected from the group consisting of water, air and water, air and foaming agent, a water based mud, an oil based mud, a synthetic based fluid, and a composition thereof. The drilling fluid also includes at least one intercalation compound of a metal chalcogenide having molecular formula MX, where M is a metallic element such as tungsten (W), and X is a chalcogen element such as sulfur (S), wherein the intercalation compound has a fullerene-like hollow structure or tubular-like structure.

A solid lubricant is for a bearing and includes at least thirty percent by weight of graphite, a binding material, and inorganic lubricating nanoparticles. Also, a bearing filled with the solid lubricant is provided.

A nanostructure that includes a multi-layered fullerene-like nano-structure composed of a plurality of layers each having a metal chalcogenide composition that has a molecular formula of MX, in which M is a metallic element selected from the group consisting of titanium (Ti), vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), zirconium (Zr), niobium (Nb), molybdenum (Mo), technetium (Tc), ruthenium (Ru), rhodium (Rh), palladium (Pd), silver (Ag), cadmium (Cd), hafnium (Hf), tantalum (Ta), tungsten (W), rhenium (Re), osmium (Os), iridium (Ir), platinum (Pt), gold (Au), mercury (Hg) and combinations thereof, and X is a chalcogen element selected from the group consisting of sulfur (S), selenium (Se), tellurium (Te), oxygen (O) and combinations thereof. An outer layer of the multi-layered fullerene-like structure includes at least one sectioned portion that extends along a direction away from the curvature of the multi-layered fullerene-like nano-structure.

Applications for inorganic fullerene-like particles

A roller structure including a cylindrical casing having an outer wear surface and an inner surface provided by a bore extending through the cylindrical casing. At least one anti-friction bearing is positioned within the bore in contact with the inside surface of the cylindrical casing. The anti-friction bearing includes a solid lubricant. In one embodiment, the roller structure is a roller turn roller and is a component of a guide for a turn of a conveyor system, wherein the outer wear surface is for contacting the chain of the conveyer system. A method of lubricating a roller structure is also provided.
