The present disclosure relates to toner compositions containing an IR-taggant, and method of making thereof. The disclosure also relates to method for confirming authenticity of an item.

The continuous process for manufacturing toners disclosed herein includes continuously feeding components of a toner composition into a feed section of a screw extruder at a controlled rate. The continuous process for manufacturing toners may include feeding the components of a toner composition into the feed section of a screw extruder without performing an external or secondary dispersion step. That is to say, the components of the toner composition may be fed directly into the extruder without using dispersions of individual components as used in batch processes. Rather, the toner components are added to the extruder in dry form, melt-mixed, and may be dispersed in aqueous form in the extruder. The process may produce micron-sized toner particles, thus no further size reduction may be necessary.

Continuous process for manufacturing toners

Included is an emulsion aggregation toner formulation having at least one latex and a combination of at least two waxes, wherein one wax is a synthetic wax, and another wax is a natural wax, and further including a developer containing a carrier and the just-described toner.

Herein is disclosed a process for producing emulsion aggregation toner including (i) adding a base to an emulsion aggregation toner to increase the pH of the toner to from about 7 to about 12; (ii) sieving and filtering the toner; (iii) washing the toner with an enzyme selected from the group consisting of carboxylic ester hydrolase and sulfuric ester hydrolase; (iv) filtering the toner; (v) washing the toner with reverse osmosis or deionized water; and (vi) adding an acid to reduce the pH of the toner to from about 3 to about 8.

Cross-linked toner resin having linear portions and cross-linked portions of high density microgel particles, where the toner resin is an unsaturated polyester resin, is prepared using a liquid chemical initiator such as 1,1-bis(t-butyl peroxy)-3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexane so that the cross-linked resin achieved contains less than 0.20 percent by weight of acids. In particular, the cross-linked toner resin is free of benzoic acid. The method of making the cross-linked toner resin includes (a) spraying the liquid chemical initiator onto the unsaturated polyester resin prior to, during or subsequent to melting of the unsaturated polyester resin to form a polymer melt; and (b) subsequently cross-linking the polymer melt under high shear to form the cross-linked toner resin.
