An arrangement for storing and distributing a fluid on board a rotary reactor such as a rotary kiln. The application discloses a rotary reduction kiln for reducing a metallic oxide such as iron oxide to a lower state of oxidation. A liquid hydrocarbon is used as a reductant in the reduction process for the metallic oxide. The kiln includes a cylindrical chamber adapted to receive the charge of material which is being subjected to the reduction process. A plurality of rows of nozzles are mounted on and supported by the kiln in hydraulic communication with the interior of the reduction chamber. Flow of hydrocarbon liquid to each row of nozzles is controlled by a corresponding flow control valve in accordance with the position of the corresponding row of nozzles relative to the charge of material in the kiln. A plurality of hydro-pneumatic accumulators having the hydraulic sections thereof connected to a common manifold are mounted on and rotatable with the kiln. Each accumulator includes a pneumatic section which is precharged to a predetermined pneumatic pressure. The common manifold of the hydraulic sections of the plurality of accumulators is hydraulically connected to the plurality of rows of nozzles through a pressure regulating device and through corresponding flow control valves whereby to provide a liquid supply at a controlled pressure and flow rate to the nozzles when the corresponding control valves are in 'On' position.

Fluid storage and distribution arrangement mounted on rotary reactor

Flow control valves are mounted with corresponding axial rows of nozzles about the periphery of a rotary kiln. A metering cylinder is mounted on the kiln and rotates therewith. A piston member is moveable in the metering cylinder in alternately opposite directions to deliver a predetermined measured volume of a liquid hydrocarbon such as fuel oil from said cylinder equally in each direction of movement of said piston member. A first hydraulic circuit interconnects each of said liquid flow control valves with a liquid fuel supply and with one end of said metering cylinder on one side of said piston member, and a second hydraulic circuit interconnects each of said liquid flow control valves with an opposite end of said metering cylinder on an opposite side of said piston member and with a plurality of nozzles in the row of nozzles corresponding to the given flow control valve. Means is provided to selectively move each flow control valve to an 'ON' position to permit hydraulic flow through said first and said second hydraulic circuits of the respective flow control valve when the given row of nozzles corresponding to the given flow control valve moves to a first predetermined location under a bed of metallic oxide, and to move each flow control valve to an 'OFF' position to prevent hydraulic flow through said first and said second hydraulic circuits of the respective flow control valve when said given row of nozzles moves to a second predetermined location under the bed of metallic oxide.

Liquid metering and distribution arrangement for rotary reactor

The gas-on pipe is supported independently of the firing hood to provide for a greater length of the gas-on pipe thereby reducing the deflection stress in the gas-on pipe to acceptable values; adjustments to the end of the gas-on pipe is facilitated during kiln operation to obtain low stress values; the location of the end of the gas-on pipe is not affected by thermal expansion of the firing hood; and cooling process air leakage into the firing hood which causes overheating or process complications is eliminated.

Support for reduction kiln gas-on system independently of firing hood

A shell gas burner is provided to preheat a kiln wherein the burner can be also used for process axial air and has provisions for retracting the burner for protection from high heat source or extending the burner for ease of replacement.

Multipurpose kiln shell gas burner

Apparatus for controlling the delivery of fuel and air to a rotary reduction kiln wherein both the fuel and air flow through the same fluid distribution nozzle. Separate fuel and air valves control the flow through the nozzles. Two separate means are provided about the kiln for operating each valve as the kiln rotates. Each of these means is individually adjustable to a first position where the valve setting is sequentially altered as the kiln rotates and to a second position where the valve setting is unaltered as the kiln rotates.

Controllable distribution system for rotary kiln

A nozzle for use with a rotary kiln of the type used for reducing ore, such as iron ore, to a lower state of oxidation. The nozzle projects in a generally radial direction through the kiln shell to inject fluid into the interior of the rotary kiln. The nozzle comprises a gas passage for admitting a reductant gaseous fluid such as natural gas (methane) or an oxidizing fluid such as air into the kiln at appropriate times in the cycle of rotation of the kiln. The nozzle also includes a central oil tube slidably adjustably mounted in a sleeve which extends to the nozzle tip. The gas passage through the nozzle forms a hollow chamber around the sleeve in which the oil tube is enclosed, whereby the gas passing through the hollow chamber provides a cooling action on the oil tube and on the nozzle tip. The discharge outlet of the oil tube may be located within its enclosing sleeve in spaced relation to the nozzle tip, and in a cooler zone than the nozzle tip, whereby to minimize clogging of the oil tube discharge outlet by carbon deposits or the like. The central oil tube may be slidably moved within its enclosing sleeve to permit cleaning of carbon deposits from the nozzle tip. A quick disconnect coupling at the inlet end of the central oil tube permits disconnection of the oil supply to the oil tube while the kiln is rotating, permitting insertion of a cleaning rod in the oil passage of the central oil tube to 'rod out' the central oil tube, the cleaning rod being extendible into cleaning engagement with the nozzle tip. The central oil tube may also be completely removed and replaced with another oil tube while the kiln is rotating.

Nozzle for rotary kiln

A process and apparatus are disclosed for delivering fuel and air to a rotary reduction kiln wherein both the fuel and air alternately flow through the same fluid distribution nozzle. Means are provided about the kiln for operating means to alternately deliver of fuel or air through the same nozzle. At least one of the operating means is selectively movable into and out of the position of operating said valve.

Reduction kiln having a controllable distribution system

A seal is disclosed between a stationary hood and an end of a rotary kiln enclosed thereby to prevent entrance of atmospheric air or the exit of process gas. The seal includes a first annular seal ring on a flange to rotate with the kiln, and a second and nonrotating annular seal ring mounted on an axially movable cylinder arranged around the kiln. The cylinder is part of a movable assembly that also cooperates with the kiln flange to define an annular chamber encompassing both seal rings and which is filled with a pressurized gas to prevent leakage between the rings. A thin annular flexible diaphragm around the kiln is circumferentially sealed on one end to the hood and on the other end to the movable cylinder. The diaphragm is sufficiently flexible to allow the cylinder and attached seal ring to move axially, as the kiln expands, to maintain an effective seal. A biased linkage pushes the two seal rings relatively together while thermal expansion of the kiln causes the diaphragm to fold and contraction causes the diaphragm to unfold. The diaphragm is shielded from high temperature kiln gases by an annular flexible wiper that projects inwardly of the movable cylinder to engage a stationary cylinder secured to the hood; and this wiper along with the diaphragm, hood and the stationary cylinder define a chamber filled with relatively cool pressurized gas to cool the diaphragm and resist leakage of high temperature kiln gas into the chamber defined in part by the flexible diaphragm.
