Disclosed herein is a process for preparing a sulfurized non-overbased calcium phenate detergent having a reduced content of un-sulfurized alkyl-substituted phenol and its salt. The process steps involve adding an organic solvent to the detergent, wherein the organic solvent has a boiling point of equal or above the boiling point of the un-sulfurized alkyl-substituted phenol. Distilling the organic solvent from the detergent to reduce the content of the un-sulfurized alkyl-substituted phenol.

A carboxylate detergent prepared by the process comprising (a) alkylating a hydroxyaromatic compound with at least one normal alpha olefin having from about 12 to about 30 carbon atoms per molecule that has been isomerized to obtain an isomerized alpha olefin having 15-98 wt % branching and a residual alpha olefin content of between from about 0.1 to about 30 wt %, thereby producing an alkylated hydroxyaromatic compound; (b) neutralizing the resulting alkylated hydroxyaromatic compound with an alkali metal base; (c) carbonating the alkali metal salt from step (b) with carbon dioxide; (d) acidifying the salt produced in step (c); and (e) overbasing the resulting alkylated hydroxyaromatic carboxylic acid.

Disclosed herein is a neutral or overbased salt of a sulfurized alkylhydroxyaromatic compound obtained by the process comprising the steps of (a) sulfurizing an alkylhydroxyaromatic compound derived from alkylation of a hydroxyaromatic compound with one or more olefins comprising Cto Coligomers of monomers selected from propylene, butylene or mixtures thereof to provide a sulfurized alkylhydroxyaromatic reaction product; (b) removing any unsulfurized alkylhydroxyaromatic compound from the sulfurized alkylhydroxyaromatic reaction product of step (a) to obtain a sulfurized alkylhydroxyaromatic compound substantially free of the unsulfurized alkylhydroxyaromatic compound; and (c) neutralizing the sulfurized alkylhydroxyaromatic compound of step (b) to provide a salt of the sulfurized alkylhydroxyaromatic compound, wherein the overbased salt of the sulfurized alkylhydroxyaromatic compound contains less than about 2% by combined mass of the unsulfurized alkylhydroxyaromatic compound and its unsulfurized metal salt.

The present invention is directed to a method for preparing an unsulfurized, carboxylate-containing additive for lubricating oils and the product produced by said method, wherein said method comprises a) neutralization of a mixture of at least two alkyl phenols using an alkaline earth base in the presence of a promoter, to produce a mixture of alkyl phenates, wherein the mixture of at least two alkyl phenols comprises at least a first alkyl phenol wherein the alkyl group is derived from an isomerized alpha olefin and a second alkyl phenol wherein the alkyl group is derived from a branched chain olefin; (b) carboxylation of the mixture of alkyl phenates obtained in step (a) using carbon dioxide under carboxylation conditions sufficient to convert at least 20 mole % of the starting alkyl phenols to alkyl salicylate; and (c) removal of at least about 10% of the starting mixture of at least two alkyl phenols from the product produced in step (b) to produce said additive.

The present invention is directed to super overbased polyalkenyl sulfonate and alkylaryl sulfonate composition comprising (a) one or more super overbased polyalkenyl sulfonates and (b) one or more super overbased alkylaryl sulfonates wherein the total base number (TBN) of the sulfonate composition is greater than 400. The present invention provides a novel unsulfurized, carboxylate-containing additive for lubricating oils, comprising a mixture of alkaline earth metal salts (hydrocarbyl phenate/hydrocarbyl salicylate) and a reduced amount of unreacted hydrocarbyl phenols, as well as additive packages, concentrates and finished oil compositions comprising the same. Specifically, it relates to additives comprising said mixture in which said hydrocarbyl salicylate is primarily single-aromatic-ring hydrocarbyl salicylate. The invention also provides a method for producing said additive.
