A support structure for clamping the inner coils and inner lamination rings of an inner stator column of an electromagnetic induction pump to prevent damaging vibration. A spine assembly, including a base plate, a center post and a plurality of ribs, serves as the structural frame for the inner stator. Stacked alignment rings provide structure to the lamination rings and locate them concentrically around the spine assembly central axis. The alignment rings are made of a material having a high thermal expansion coefficient to compensate for the lower expansion of the lamination rings and, overall, provide an approximate match to the expansion of the inner flow duct. The net result is that the radial clamping provided by the duct around the stator iron is maintained (approximately) over a range of temperatures and operating conditions. Axial clamping of the inner stator structure is achieved via tie rods which run through grooves in the ribs and engage the base plate at the bottom of the inner stator and engage a clamping plate at the top. Slender tie rods and a flexible clamping plate are used to provide compliance in the axial clamping system to accommodate differential thermal growth (axially) between the tie rods and lamination ring elements without losing clamping force.

A stator core for an electromagnetic pump includes a plurality of circumferentially adjoining groups of flat laminations disposed about a common centerline axis and collectively defining a central bore and a discontinuous outer perimeter, with adjacent groups diverging radially outwardly to form V-shaped gaps. An annular band surrounds the groups and is predeterminedly tensioned to clamp together the laminations, and has a predetermined flexibility in a radial direction to form substantially straight bridge sections between the adjacent groups.

A stator frame for an electromagnetic pump includes a casing joined to a hub by a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart struts. At least one electrically insulated power crossover lead extends through the hub, through a crossover one of the struts, and through the casing for carrying electrical current therethrough.

A stator core for supporting an electrical coil includes a plurality of groups of circumferentially abutting flat laminations which collectively form a bore and perimeter. A plurality of wedges are interposed between the groups, with each wedge having an inner edge and a thicker outer edge. The wedge outer edges abut adjacent ones of the groups to provide a continuous path around the perimeter.

Electromagnetic pump stator core

An electrical stator of an electromagnetic pump includes first and second spaced apart coils each having input and output terminals for carrying electrical current. An elongate electrical connector extends between the first and second coils and has first and second opposite ends. The connector ends include respective slots receiving therein respective ones of the coil terminals to define respective first and second joints. Each of the joints includes a braze filler fixedly joining the connector ends to the respective coil terminals for carrying electrical current therethrough.

A method for winding stator coils and fabricating laminated iron stator rings, then assembling same into an annular stator column for use in a linear flow electromagnetic induction pump for pumping electrically conductive liquid metal and circulation of same through the coolant circuit of a nuclear fission reactor plant or other liquid metal systems.

Method for producing inner stators for electromagnetic pumps

An electromagnetic submerged pump has an outer cylindrical stator with an inner cylindrical conductive core for the submerged pumping of sodium in the cylindrical interstitial volume defined between the stator and core. The cylindrical interstitial volume is typically vertically oriented, and defines an inlet at the bottom and an outlet at the top. The outer stator generates upwardly conveyed toroidal magnetic fields, which fields convey preferably from the bottom of the pump to the top of the pump liquid sodium in the cold leg of a sodium cooled nuclear reactor. The outer cylindrical stator has a vertically disposed duct surrounded by alternately stacked layers of coil units and laminates.

Submersible sodium pump

An electromagnetic pump for molten metals wherein a rotating magnetic field causes rotation of the molten metal about the axis of the pump structure. A swirl inducer at the inlet end of the pump has inlet passageways radially spaced from the axis of the pump so as to induce rotational flow in the molten metal passing therethrough. A dual-conical shaped inductor supported within and axially aligned with a molten metal passageway forms in combination with said passageway a conically tapered flow path for the molten metal. Angularly oriented flutes are provided in the region of the inductor periphery within the vicinity of the largest diameter portion thereof in order to convert the rotational flow of the molten metal back into axial flow for discharge from the pump.
