An example method includes storing status data for a network communication device connected to a host device by a pluggable connector in a memory of the network communication device. A change in the status data is signaled using a signal on the pluggable connector. The status data is sent from the memory of the network communication device to the host device over the pluggable connector. The status data is displayed on a local indicator of the host device.

A method may include transmitting an open contention-based grant to optical network units (ONUs) and receiving, from at least one of the ONUs, a response to the open contention-based grant. The method may also include determining whether a collision has occurred in response to the open contention-based grant. The method may further include provisioning grants to ONUs in response to determine that a collision has occurred.

Systems and methods of open contention-based grant allocations

An optical device may include a communication interface and processing logic configured to receive a broadcast contention-based allocation from an optical line terminal (OLT), wherein the contention-based allocation is associated with activation of the optical device in an optical network. The processing logic may also be configured to transmit a message in response to the contention-based allocation, wherein the message includes information identifying the optical device and receive, from the OLT, an assignment message or a feedback message in response to the transmitted message. The processing logic may be further configured to execute a retransmission procedure based on the assignment or feedback message indicating that a collision occurred.

Systems and methods for collision resolution during ONU activation

A method may include determining a number of categories associated with optical network units (ONUs) in a system and assigning an allocation identifier to each of the respective categories. The method may also include transmitting the assigned allocation identifiers to the ONUs and transmitting a contention-based allocation to the ONUs, wherein the contention-based allocation includes a first one of the allocation identifiers.
