Improved fire retardants that include guanylurea phosphate &lsqb;(H N&mdash;C(NH)&mdash;NH&mdash;C(O)&mdash;NH ).H PO &rsqb; (GUP) and boric acid, materials such as wood and composite wood products that include these fire retardants, and methods of making and using same.

A cationic fibrous acetate salt of boehmite alumina produced by providing a slurry of water and basic aluminum acetate, stirring the slurry to ensure substantially complete mixing thereof, reacting the slurry in a vessel for a time, temperature, and stirring rate sufficient to produce a fibrous cationic acetate salt of boehmite alumina having a zeta potential of greater than about 25 and a weight ratio of aluminum to acetate of less than about 4.

A method for producing copper oxide. In the method, a copper bearing material, aqueous ammonia, and a sufficient amount of an ammonium salt to double the rate of production of copper oxide in the absence of the salt are placed in a single vessel. The vessel is closed, and oxygen is fed into the vessel. The mixture is stirred and heated to a temperature of between approximately 70.degree. and 130.degree. C. to dissolve the copper bearing material into aqueous ammoniacal copper ion. The aqueous ammoniacal copper ion is reacted with the oxygen in the vessel to form solid copper oxide particles, which are then recovered.

Method for producing copper oxide

A process for the preparation of a dispersed Group VI-B metal sulfide hydrocarbon oil hydroprocessing catalyst comprising reacting aqueous ammonia and a Group VI-B metal compound, such as molybdenum oxide or tungsten oxide, to form water soluble compounds such as aqueous ammonium molybdates or tungstates. The aqueous ammonium molybdates or tungstates are sulfided at a relatively low temperature with hydrogen sulfide without feed oil, and wherein the mole ratio of the sulfiding agent to metal salts is greater than 2, to produce molybdenum or tungsten sulfide catalysts of high hydroprocessing activity. The catalyst slurry and feed oil can then be passed to a hydroprocessing reactor or can be further sulfided in additional steps of increasing temperature.

Heavy oil hydroprocessing with group VI metal slurry catalyst

Group VIB metal sulfide slurry catalysts having a pore volume in the pore size range 10 to 300.ANG. radius of at least 0.1 cc/g. Also, Group VIB metal sulfide catalysts having a surface area of at least 20 m.sup.2 /g. Suitable Group VIB metals are molybdenum and tungsten, preferably molybdenum. The Group VIB metal sulfide can be approximately a Group VIB metal disulfide. The slurry catalyst can be promoted with a Group VIII metal, such as nickel or cobalt.

A process for the preparation of a dispersed Group VIB metal sulfide hydrocarbon oil hydroprocessing catalyst comprising reacting aqueous ammonia and a Group VIB metal compound, such as molybdenum oxide or tungsten oxide, to form water soluble compounds such as aqueous ammonium molybdates or tungstates. The aqueous ammonium molybdates or tungstates are sulfided at a relatively low temperature with hydrogen sulfide without feed oil. The slurry stream is then passed through a separator and ammonia is flashed and separated from the system, leaving a separator residue slurry. The separator residue slurry is then mixed with feed oil, hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide and sulfided at a relatively high temperature to produce a dispersed molybdenum sulfide or tungsten sulfide catalyst of high hydroprocessing activity. The catalyst slurry and feed oil can then be passed to a hydroprocessing reactor.

A wood preservative composition comprises a wood preservative such as a chromated copper arsenate-oil emulsion or an ammoniacal copper arsenate emulsion having about 0.1 to 15 percent chromated copper arsenate, ammoniacal copper arsenate, or ammoniacal copper zinc arsenate, about 1 to 20 percent oil and about 0.3 to 2.5 percent (based on total final emulsion) surfactant material. The first surfactant preferably has a hydrophilic lipophilic balance of about 7 to 9.5 and a second surfactant has a hydrophilic lipophilic balance of about 15 to 20. It is preferred that the first surfactant have an ethoxyl mole ratio less than about 5 and that the second surfactant have a mole ratio greater than about 15. The surfactant material may be composed of a first surfactant having an average mole ratio of about 1 to 5 and a second surfactant having an average mole ratio of about 20 to 100. The composition is storage stable for extended periods and provides a number of beneficial properties for wood products. A preferred group of surfactants for use in the present invention are ethoxylated alkylphenols or ethoxylated alkyl alcohols. A related method includes establishing an emulsion in oil of a first surfactant having an ethoxyl mole ratio less than about 5 and establishing in water a second surfactant having a mole ratio greater than about 15. The solutions are admixed and about 0.1 to 15 percent chromated copper arsenate, ammoniacal copper arsenate, or ammoniacal copper zinc arsenate is introduced into the mixed emulsions. The first and second surfactants may be emulsified in the oil which is subsequently admixed with the water, if desired. The chromated copper arsenate, ammoniacal copper arsenate or ammoniacal copper zinc arsenate bearing mixed emulsions are then introduced into wood. The composition and method are particularly useful with respect to wood products which will be used over prolonged periods in outdoor or other potentially hostile environments and are particulalry useful for utility poles, building products, and marine applications.

A method for fixing chromated copper arsenate agents in wood by treating the wood with a fixing agent selected from the following: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is the same or different and is hydrogen, phenyl or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R.sub.2 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms and R.sub.3 is (R.sub.4).sub.2 (HO)C-- or R.sub.4 OOC-- and R.sub.4 is hydrogen, an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, phenyl or pyridyl.

Heavy oil hydroprocessing with Group VI metal slurry catalyst

A process for the preparation of a dispersed Group VIB metal sulfide catalyst which is promoted with a Group VIII metal for use in hydrocarbon oil hydroprocessing comprising dissolving a Group VIB metal compound, such as molybdenum oxide or tungsten oxide, with ammonia to form a water soluble compound such as aqueous ammonium molybdate or ammonium tungstate. The aqueous ammonium molybdate or ammonium tungstate is sulfided in a plurality of sulfiding steps at increasing temperatures. A compound containing a Group VIII metal is added to any sulfiding step in preference to the Group VIB metal dissolving step. The catalyst slurry and feed oil can then be passed to a hydroprocessing reactor.

Dispersed group VIB metal sulfide catalyst promoted with Group VIII metal

A process for the recovery of a spent molybdenum catalyst from a hydroprocess for the upgrading of a nickel and vanadium containing hydrocarbonaceous mineral oil. The nickel and vanadium contaminated molybdenum catalyst is oxidized to convert the metals to oxides. Aqueous ammonia is added to preferentially dissolve molybdenum from nickel and vanadium. An amount of ammonia is used in excess of the amount required to produce an active catalyst for recycle and the excess ammonia is removed prior to recycle of the catalyst. The selectively of the separation of molybdenum from nickel and vanadium is improved by adding a reducing agent before or during the ammonia dissolving step. Hydrazine is a suitable reducing agent. The recovered molybdenum is sulfided and recycled.

Heavy oil hydroprocess including recovery of molybdenum catalyst

A process for the preparation of a dispersed Group VIB metal sulfide hydrocarbon oil hydroprocessing catalyst comprising reacting aqueous ammonia and a Group VIB metal compound, such as molybdenum oxide or tungsten oxide, to form a water soluble oxygen-containing compound such as aqueous ammonium molybdate or tungstate. The aqueous ammonium molybdate or tungstate is sulfided in at least three sulfiding steps of increasing temperature including a low temperature sulfiding step, an intermediate temperature sulfiding step and a high temperature sulfiding step. Some of the oxygen associated with said Group VIB metal is replaced by sulfur in each of the sulfiding steps. It has been found the maximum total level of replacement of oxygen by sulfur achieved in the intermediate temperature step is particularly critical to catalyst activity. In accordance with this invention, in the intermediate temperature sulfiding step the maximum total stoichiometric level of replacement by sulfur of oxygen associated with the Group VIB metal reaches a level of 50 to 95 percent. Additional replacement of oxygen with sulfur occurs in the high temperature sulfiding step.

Process for preparing heavy oil hydroprocessing slurry catalyst

Catalytic material is provided by a composition comprising the elements vanadium, non-water-contained hydrogen, phosphorus and non-water-contained oxygen. Freshly prepared catalytic material proxides relatively high yields upon its initial use in the catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbon feedstocks, such as n-butane and benzene to maleic anhydride.
